How Long Are Minnesota Tax Refunds Taking?

The Minnesota Department of Revenue doesn’t publish how long it takes to process returns and issue refunds. The expected refund wait time depends on several factors, including the following:

  • How returns are filed — electronically or by mailing a paper form

  • The chosen option for receiving refunds — direct deposit or paper check

  • The Minnesota Department of Revenue’s tax return processing, which includes possible requests for more information

Why Is My Minnesota State Refund Taking So Long?

Sending your tax return and receiving a refund by mail will extend the time it takes to get your money. File your return electronically and elect direct deposit to speed up the refund process.

Errors on the return and further review by the Minnesota Department of Revenue can also cause a delay. Ensure your tax return is accurate and contains all necessary information.

An amended tax return may also cause a refund delay and may be necessary if someone notices an error. To amend a state tax return in Minnesota, taxpayers must file Form M1X via U.S. mail within 3.5 years of the original return’s due date.
