Where did Patrick Mahomes go to college? Chiefs QB was a star for Texas Tech football

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has blossomed into one of the NFL's best players since being drafted 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech.

The 28-year-old is already vying for his third Super Bowl win, which only five other quarterbacks have achieved in NFL history: Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw and Earl Morrall. And despite his relatively young age, the former Red Raiders quarterback has a chance to solidify himself as one of the all-time greats when the Chiefs face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Mahomes has been stellar in the playoffs this season, completing 70 of his 103 passes for 718 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions while leading Kansas City to a 3-0 record, which included road victories over the 2-seed Buffalo Bills and top-seeded Baltimore Ravens.

Mahomes will also face a fellow Big 12 quarterback (49ers signal-caller Brock Purdy, who played at Iowa State), for the second consecutive season. Last season, Mahomes bested former Oklahoma and current Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Where did Patrick Mahomes go to college?

Mahomes attended Texas Tech for three seasons, where he became one of the school's most prolific passers ever.

As a redshirt junior, Mahomes led the country with a whopping 5,052 passing yards, along with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also ran for 285 yards with 12 touchdowns.

Mahomes started the final three games of his freshman season and was an instant star. In games against Oklahoma, Iowa State and Baylor, he threw for 1,319 combined yards with 14 touchdowns. Eventually, Mahomes completed 857 of 1,349 passes for 11,252 yards with 93 touchdowns to 29 interceptions in his career, also rushing for 845 yards with 22 touchdowns.

Mahomes was a three-star recruit in the 2014 recruiting class, rated as the No. 22 pro-style quarterback and No. 389 overall prospect, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings.

Mahomes, who attended Whitehouse High School in Texas, also held offers from Oklahoma State and Rice, according to 247Sports.

Mahomes was the second quarterback selected in 2017, behind North Carolina's Mitchell Trubisky, who went No. 2 to Chicago. Current Cleveland Browns and former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson (No. 12 overall) was the lone other first-round pick that season.
