WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The ice cream cone is down, but it’s safe.

When the Herschleb’s sign and ice cream cone came down a few weeks ago, many readers took to social media to document the end of the landmark and to share memories from the restaurant. Several people asked what happened to the iconic ice cream cone along Baker and 16th streets.

Nathan Schill, the vice president of Rapids Sheet Metal Heating & Cooling, told the Daily Tribune the ice cream cone is in storage for the time being as the company decides what to do with it.

Passersby might notice some movement on the property in the future, as well. Schill said the business is in the process of getting bids to make exterior improvements but doesn’t plan to start work on the building anytime soon.

Rapids Sheet Metal confirmed in October it purchased the former Herschleb's property and hoped to expand the business in the future. Rapids Sheet Metal operates on the same block, at 631 17th St. N., and has served the community since 1915, focusing on heating and cooling services and Lennox products.
