"I love the mountains," says Michael Fuerstman, co-founder of Pendry Hotels & Resorts. "I didn’t grow up skiing, but have thrown myself into it and fallen in love. I’ve experienced it with friends, with my wife, and now with young kids, and Park City and Deer Valley have become our seasonal second home."

The Utah destinations are even more appealing to Fuerstman because he knows just where to stay: his family's hospitality business owns both the Montage Deer Valley, which opened in 2010, and the Pendry Park City, which is going into its second full winter. Both properties are popular with athletic travelers, but might be at their most packed when January's Sundance Film Festival takes over Park City. Fuerstman's glad to be in town for all of it: "I’m one of those guys who likes the action and energy of Sundance," he says, "but really loves to go out and ski and have the mountain to myself."

There might be less people on the mountain during the festival, but don't count on the Pendry being too quiet. The hotel, in the charming Canyons area of town, entertains guests and draws in neighbors with offerings including a Mexican restaurant, a pizza parlor, a stylish Japanese steakhouse, and a chic lobby bar.

"Hotels are fun," Fuerstman says. "The reality is you can stay in a private residence, but here you’ve got a spa, great places to dine, places to take meetings or entertain. We can feel residential and private when you need that, but also have all the bells and whistles—and that makes for a great stay."
