🍲 WHAT'S COOKING: Green Leaf, a restaurant that puts the family in family dining

Editor's note: Each Monday online The Daily Record will feature good eats, whether from a restaurant, a store, a food truck or elsewhere. Check back each week to see What's Cooking.

The Green Leaf Restaurant puts the family in family style restaurant, and has for nearly 60 years.

Jason and Samantha Stine are third generation owners of the Cleveland Road, Wooster, staple that still has the car hop stops for orders to go. The restaurant was started by Jason's grandfather, Robert Horn, in 1965. Jason's parents, Ron and Betty, were the next proprietors, and Jason began helping out more than 30 years ago as a teen.

The ever popular all-you can-eat fish special is so good it is featured two days on the menu, Wednesday and Fridays. The fish is hand-breaded and fried, served with French fries and creamy coleslaw, another must eat treat on the menu.

People keep coming to Green Leaf because they know what to expect. Great service, great food and great value, according to Stine. Many customers go for that "family feel."

The nine remaining siblings of the 12 children of the Sprang family from Shreve got together at the Green Leaf to commemorate the anniversary of the passing two of the Sprang brothers in March.

"We had to have this dinner here at the Green Leaf," said Susan Sprang of Florida. "We love it here. It's been a regular family stop for us for years. They have this nice big room here that can accommodate us. And my son went to school with the owner, Jason."

Friendly, familiar staff adds to homey feel

Stine points out one of his favorite things about being a restaurateur is the wonderful crew he has assembled to prepare and serve the meals.

There are 60 staff members at the Cleveland Road restaurant. They recently hired on three staff members from The Farmer Boy Restaurant, which was destroyed by fire.

Many of the staff members at Green Leaf have been there for a long time and they know their customers.

"We have a great staff, which makes it pleasant to come to work," Stine said. "And we have such a wide variety of clientele that comes here to eat."

Most of the meals are homemade, including some of the pies they offer for dessert, adding to the homey feel. The restaurant runs weekly lunch and dinner specials.
