Whatcom’s gas prices are some of the lowest in Washington state. Where to save at the pump

Washington state’s gas prices have fluctuated dramatically throughout 2022, and as the new year starts, Whatcom County is one of the cheapest counties to fill up your tank.

The price of gas, on average, has decreased by 15 cents in the last month in the United States, at $3.26 a gallon as of Wednesday, Jan. 4, compared to $3.41 in December, according to the American Automobile Association. But compared to last week’s average gallon cost, prices have increased by 13 cents.

Washington state’s average cost of gas per gallon is now $3.89 a gallon, a 44-cent decrease compared to December’s average of $4.33 a gallon. Back in January 2021 a year ago, gas averaged $3.88 a gallon in Washington state, according to AAA.

Washington state has the fourth-highest gas prices in the country after Hawaii, California and Nevada. Hawaii has the highest gas in the country, averaging $5.02 a gallon, according to AAA.

Whatcom County’s average cost of gas per gallon is currently $3.62 according to AAA data, one of the lowest averages in the state.

Douglas County, in the center of Washington, had the cheapest average gas price per gallon at $3.48 a gallon, beating Whatcom by only 14 cents.

The Bellingham Herald also compared gas prices to Whatcom County’s northern neighbor, Vancouver, B.C., where gas prices average 169.9 Canadian cents per liter, or $4.79 per gallon, according to the Canadian Automobile Association.

The cheapest gas price in Whatcom County and Washington state Wednesday was $2.75 a gallon at an ARCO gas station at 8247 Guide Meridian Road in Lynden, according to GasBuddy.
