Whatcom beach cleanups, artisan markets and youth events honor Earth Day this weekend

Many organizations and businesses are hosting service projects and events across Whatcom County starting this weekend to celebrate Earth Day ahead of the holiday on Monday, April 22.

From children’s events, educational programs and service projects, Whatcom County residents can participate in Earth Day events throughout the upcoming weekend:

An Earth Day community work party will run from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20 at Squalicum Creek. Participants only need to bring weather-appropriate clothes, shoes and a water bottle. The work party aims to remove invasive species and improve the wildlife habitat near the Squalicum Creek Re-route project. Participants are asked to register for the event in advance on the city’s website, and once registered, will receive more info about the event.

A beach clean-up will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bellingham waterfront on Saturday, April 20. Participants will help dispose of waste, plastic and other harmful materials on the waterfront and all cleanup equipment will be provided. Registration is not required but is encouraged, and can be done online. The event will be at 1000 Hilton Ave. in Bellingham.

Boundary Bay Brewing Co. is hosting an Earth Day market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. The market will feature over 10 local, sustainably minded vendors in the beer garden and is open for all ages. Boundary Bay Brewing Co. is at 1107 Railroad Ave. in Bellingham.

A free Earth Day recycling event will run from noon to 3 p.m. at the Bellingham Covenant Church, in partnership with the city of Bellingham, Sanitary Service Company, Recycling & Disposal Services Inc., and Whatcom County Health and Community Services on Saturday, April 20. The recycling event will accept sensitive documents to be shredded, old electronics and batteries to be recycled or refurbished, and athletic shoes or sneakers to be donated or recycled. Bellingham Covenant Church is at 1530 East Bakerview Rd.

The Whatcom Museum is hosting a family Earth Day activity day from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. Admission to the museum will only cost $3 for the event and will include special crafts, reptiles and activities, as well as the museum’s regular exhibits. The event will take place at the Lightcatcher Building at 250 Flora St. in Bellingham.

An Earth Day artisan market will be hosted at The Majestic Art Cafe from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. The event will include arts and crafts, coffee and waffles from Waffles in Paradise, flowers and salsa dancing. The Majestic is at 1027 Forest St. in Bellingham.

Children’s storytime at multiple Bellingham Public Library branches will celebrate Earth Day from April 22-25 by featuring Earth and nature-themed book readings for infants to 9 years old.
