Wet weather is on the way to the Coastal Bend

The National Weather Service warns area residents there’s a marginal risk of excessive rainfall occurring on Friday and a slight risk of excessive rainfall on Saturday.

The Weather Prediction Center put much of the area in a Marginal Risk area on Friday. The most severe weather is expected inland.

Rainfall could add up to around 0.5" along the coast to up to 2" across the Brush Country, the forecast stated. “Currently, there is roughly a 20-30% chance for those within the Slight Risk to receive over 2" of rain through the weekend.”

Those traveling should note there is a slight risk of excessive rainfall “for the northern Coastal Plains, Victoria Crossroads, and Brush Country on Saturday with the remainder of the region within a Marginal Risk,” forecasters said.

“Our threat for potentially heavy rainfall will increase as we head into the weekend,” NWS said in a forecast released Thursday. “The combination of an upper level disturbance across the Southwestern U.S., an approaching cold front, and increasing moisture will lead to a moderate to high chance for showers and thunderstorms Friday through Sunday.”

The National Weather Service predicts up to two inches of rain this weekend, with the most severe weather well inland from Corpus Christi.

Forecasters see a 20% to 25% chance of heavy rain on Friday and increasing chances Friday night through Sunday.

“We will see a 40-80% chance of showers and storms on Saturday with the greatest threat across the Brush Country and Coastal Plains,” the forecast said.

NWS warned that scattered flash floods are possible, “mainly localized with urban areas, some roads and small streams most vulnerable. A few low-lying structures flooded. Storm drains and retention ponds become full and may overflow in a few places. Flood waters may cause several road closures.”
