How wet will this April be in North Jersey? A look at the long-term forecast

As April approaches, New Jersey residents can anticipate a mixed bag of weather patterns across the state, with varying precipitation expectations for different regions.

According to the National Weather Service, northern Jersey is set to experience precipitation levels in line with the monthly average, with no significant deviation towards below, near, or above normal. The average rainfall for the month in the Newark area stands at 3.87 inches, alongside an average high temperature of 62.6 degrees and an average low of 44.1 degrees.

In contrast, South Jersey is likely to see slightly above-normal precipitation levels throughout April, with a 33-39% chance of heightened rainfall, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Anthony Artusa.

While the chances of snow are rare, Artusa shared insights on the possibility. "Having been raised on nearby Long Island, I can say that you might see snow flurries or very light snow in April, but it's pretty rare," he said.

Reflecting on last year's weather data from the Rutgers New Jersey Weather Network offers insight into historical patterns. April 2023 witnessed an average precipitation of 5.84 inches across the state, marking a notable 2.14-inch surplus compared to the norm. This ranked as the 10th wettest April on record, representing the rainiest April since 2007 and the second wettest since 1983.

Since 1983, Bergenfield has an average of 0.3 inches of snow in April, Bob Ziff of the North Jersey Weather Observers, confirmed. "In 19 years, since 1983, we have had a trace or more of snow," he said.

Additionally, the statewide average temperature for April 2023 was 55.4 degrees, marking a deviation of 3.9 degrees above the 1991–2020 normal. This temperature anomaly places April 2023 as the third warmest on record since 1895.

With such fluctuations in precipitation and temperature, New Jersey residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for potential weather variations as April unfolds.
