Westwood girls, AC Flora boys win region openers, plus Friday’s hoops scoreboard

The Westwood girls basketball team used a big third-quarter run win its Region 5-4A opener on Friday night.

The Redhawks went on a 14-2 run to start the second half to defeat AC Flora 53-37 in a matchup of top five teams in Class 4A.

Westwood came into the game No. 4 and Flora was No. 5. The game went back and forth in the first half with the Falcons leading 23-22 at halftime.

But the Redhawks adjusted to Flora’s 2-3 zone, which gave them trouble on Tuesday against Blythewood, and took things over in the second half. Senior Jessica Woods scored 16 points and Makiah Thompson had 11 to lead Westwood.

Trinity Delaney led Flora with 18 points.

In the boys game, CP Parker scored 21 points and Jackson Gary hit two big free throws to help AC Flora to a 51-48 victory.

Parker scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half. The senior put the Falcons up 49-47 with 1:17 left. Westwood hit a free throw to cut it to 49-48 and had two chances to take the lead.

TJ Bell, who led the Redhawks with 20 points, got a good look at a 3-pointer but missed. Gray then hit two free throws to put the Falcons up 51-48 with three seconds left. He finished with 15 points.

Westwood didn’t get a shot off to tie.

South Carolina signee Arden Conyers added 14 for Westwood but was held scoreless in the second half.
