West Virginia woman who woke up from coma after two years says brother attacked her because he’s ‘mean’

A messy sibling relationship may have been at the center of a brutal attack that left a West Virginia woman in a coma for two years.

Wanda Palmer, who woke up earlier this month and accused her brother of almost killing her, said he did so because “he was mean,” reads the criminal complaint obtained by NBC Monday.

Palmer had been at a New Martinsville long term care center since June 10, 2020, when lawn care workers found her outside her Cottageville home, lying in a pool of her own blood after being bludgeoned over the head.

“The keys to the whole thing lay with the victim herself and with her unable to communicate we were left with nothing,” Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellenger told WV Metro News. “Now low and behold two years later and boom, she’s awake and able to tell us exactly what happened.”

Daniel Palmer was arrested Friday and charged with attempted murder. He is being held on a $500,000 bail.

A witness told police at the time that they had seen Daniel Palmer near his sister’s trailer the night of the attack, but police had not arrested him in the intervening two years.
