West Virginia town reelects recently indicted mayor

A West Virginia mayor who was arrested and charged Sunday cruised to reelection victory on Tuesday.

Robert Beavers defeated challenger Grover Mahone to hold onto the mayor’s office in the town of War in McDowell County despite days earlier being charged with possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence.

According to a state trooper, Beavers was pulled over Sunday after failing “to yield to stopped emergency vehicles.” The trooper smelled marijuana in the car and saw a pill bottle inside the vehicle.

Beavers said the pill bottle contained prescribed hydrocodone and he later gave officers “a small baggie of a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana,” the trooper wrote in their complaint said.

Beavers failed several standardized field sobriety tests and was arrested, Roberts said in the complaint.

Even if Beavers is convicted, he could continue to serve as mayor, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported.
