West Texas downs Olton to advance to 2A area round in volleyball

The West Texas High Comanches are heading to the area round of the Class 2A volleyball playoffs after knocking off Olton in four sets Tuesday night. West Texas won 25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 25-19.

"It's great," head coach Holly Lindley said. "The girls fought and I'm so proud of them. They deserve this."

Set one saw the Lady Comanches and Fillies battle early with WT holding a 7-6 edge before exploding for eight unanswered. Olton cut the deficit from 15-6 to 17-11, but West Texas scored six straight to have them on the verge of winning, 22-13. Olton closed to within 23-20, but WT scored the final two points they needed.

Set two was close to start again with the Lady Comanches up 9-7 before going up 20-10 thanks to an offensive explosion. Olton battled again, cutting it to 24-18, but WT got the final point it needed to take a 2-0 lead.

Set three went the opposite direction with Olton dominating from the start and taking a 21-10 edge. WT cut it close, scoring seven of the next 11, but still falling in the end.

"I just told the girls to forget that set," Lindley said. "I just told them to go and fight like they did the first two sets and they did."

They did indeed. Neither team could separate itself by more than a point with the fourth set tied virtually the whole time up to 18-18. WT scored seven of the final eight to take the set, the match and the bi-district trophy.

Zoe Smith (17 digs), Sage Lay (10 kills) and Scout Burris (10 blocks) led the way for West Texas. The Lady Comanches will play Forsan at 1 p.m. Saturday at Plainview High School in the area round.
