West Lafayette man suspected of pointing crossbow at family member

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Aaron Carpenter's failed attempt to correctly load a crossbow early Friday might have saved two men from injury, but it landed Carpenter in jail on suspicion of intimidation, according to reports on file at the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office.

Carpenter argued early Friday with family members, and the argument at one point became a fight inside a house in the 2300 block of Fleming Drive in West Lafayette, according to the sheriff's office.

The man with whom Carpenter argued retreated to the garage to deescalate the situation and was joined by another family member, according to the sheriff's office, but Carpenter went to the garage and order his family members to leave the house.

Carpenter picked up a crossbow and loaded an arrow and pointed it at the family members, according to the sheriff's office. The arrow, however, was not seated correctly and fell out, according to the sheriff's office.

That is when the two family members left and called the sheriff's office.

At the end of the investigation, deputies jailed Carpenter, 28, on suspicion of intimidation.

He remained incarcerated on Monday in lieu of a $500 cash bond and a $5,000 surety bond.
