West Lafayette boys and girls track and field conquers Hoosier Conference championship

West Lafayette proved it could carry a roster of athletes who could contribute and win a multitude of events while hosting the 75th Hoosier Conference Championship at Gordon Straley Field.

Juniors David Curl and Ryan Miloudi set the tone in three events for the boys team while junior Taylor Woods and senior Henny Schminke delivered top performances on the girls side.

Woods won the girls shot put for the Red Devils.

Curl won two events, including the long jump, and anchored the 400-meter relay team while Schminke and Miloudi both won the 1,600 to lead West Lafayette to the Hoosier Conference boys and girls team titles on Friday night.

It was an impressive outing for Curl who finished second in discuss and later ran to victory in the 400 relay while using his brother Wyatt as a source of motivation. Wyatt Curl competes in the decathlon at Air Force.

"He's a decathlete over there and I'm just as athletic as he is so let me try all this stuff," Curl said. "And I was able to do pretty well. Got a lot of room for improvement because with a lot of events you only get a certain amount of practice at each place. So it's hard to improve but you just got to be locked in."

Rensselaer Central junior Bryan Camarena battled through a broken left index fingertip on his non-throwing hand to win the discus. Camarena broke the finger after smashing it on a 40-pound dumbbell in the weight room. He couldn't throw for two weeks.

Despite the time off, Camarena showed few side effects making his mark of 159 feet, 11 inches on the first throw. Camarena's goal is to throw for 170 feet at the sectional after learning the discus and shotput in the eighth grade.

"I've just been watching YouTube videos and getting whatever advice I can," Camarena said.

Woods began throwing shot put after a knee injury during volleyball forced her to use her knees less and take time away from her club season.

"(Track) keeps me in a competitive spirit because I want to be good when high school volleyball season starts," Woods said.

Senior Joselyn Jundos rounded out top performances by claiming the 400-meter title in 59.38 seconds. Jundos carries a notebook that she writes notes in before and after every race.

"I usually take notes before and after every meet to assess how I'm feeling," Jundos said. 'Making sure that I'm zoning in and really understanding how I felt in the moment of the race and right after the race so I can improve."
