Arsenal have been dumped out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a surprise 3-1 away defeat against West Ham.

West Ham were winless against Arsenal since January 2019 but found themselves ahead after 16 minutes when Ben White headed into his own net from a corner.

Arsenal spurned chances through Eddie Nketiah and Kai Havertz in the first half and were made to pay after the break when Mohammed Kudus extended the lead after a break with a wonderful first touch and finish.

Declan Rice was greeted with boos as he came on for Arsenal but the former West Ham captain could do nothing to prevent Jarrod Bowen from finding a third, with Martin Odegaard's late goal of little consolation as his side suffered an early exit from the cup for the second season running.

By the time Declan Rice eventually took to the pitch on his return to West Ham, his rescue mission had become to look like an impossible task. The smattering of boos that greeted the return of only the third West Ham captain in history to lift a major honour were quickly became drowned out by a rapturous roar. Rice had only been on for a matter of moments when Jarrod Bowen’s deflected strike cannoned in off Aaron Ramsdale and with it, Rice’s old club led his new club by three goals. By the end, Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup with barely a whimper.

This was not a happy homecoming for Rice - it was a terrible night for Arsenal, a difficult evening for Ramsdale, and a regretful one Mikel Arteta, whose side were second-best throughout. Rice’s introduction off the bench came too late, as did the arrivals of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard, who fired a consolation goal that was barely even acknowledged in the 95th minute.

Arsenal took this fourth-round tie lightly and were punished: West Ham and David Moyes pulled off their plan and played the occasion well. They thoroughly deserved their place in the quarter-finals.

Mikel Arteta took the blame for Arsenal’s painful 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat at West Ham.

Arteta made six changes to his line-up for the fourth-round clash, starting with Declan Rice on the bench on his Hammers homecoming.

Rice, who lifted the Europa Conference League trophy as West Ham captain last season, was back at his old club for the first time since his £105million switch to the Gunners.

But he will not be getting his hands on the Carabao Cup this season after strikes from Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen, following an early own goal by Ben White, sent the north Londoners crashing out.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Gunners boss Arteta. “I’m responsible for that, we’re out of the cup, we wanted to play a very different game and compete.

“The game took a direction because of the first goal but we have to see much more from the team and earn the right to win.

“I’m disappointed with myself. We wanted to play in a different way and we weren’t able to do that. Every time we lose the pain is there.

“We have to use this pain and this defeat to prepare the best way for Newcastle on Saturday.”

Declan Rice was booed by some sections of the West Ham supporters as the England international made his first return to the London Stadium since his £105m move to Arsenal this summer.

Rice, who led West Ham to their first European trophy in 48 years when the Hammers lifted the Europa Conference League last season, became the most expensive English player of all time when he joined Mikel Arteta’s side.

The 24-year-old was brought on as a second-half substitute at the London Stadium and with his new side 2-0 down, following an own goal from Ben White and a stunning second from Mohammed Kudus.

While Rice was warmly applauded as he warmed up on the touchline, the response was rather more mixed as he replaced Jorginho on the 55th-minute mark. There were loud boos within sections of the crowd as Rice took to the field.

It was a ritual from their Ajax days when they won a trophy, one that threatened to become a regular sight in England as well. And, amid heady days for Manchester United, winning the club’s first piece of silverware for six years was arguably still not their best result of the week.

Three days before beating Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, United had come from behind to defeat Barcelona. Antony, one of Ten Hag’s pet projects, had scored the decider. And when a seemingly catalytic Casemiro and a rejuvenated Marcus Rashford struck at Wembley, United were challenging for glory on four fronts. They had lost only twice in a run of 31 games, winning 17 of 21. Ten Hag was the Old Trafford alchemist. It was easy to believe he was the best United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson. Despite his natural reserve, the Dutchman gushed about his surroundings. “I just love United,” he said, with the glow of victory at the national stadium.

Eight months on, as two Uniteds reconvene in the same competition, Old Trafford scarcely feels shrouded in romance anymore. There may be more recrimination. There certainly is the now familiar sense of underachievement. Instead of emulating Ferguson, Ten Hag risks following in the footsteps of some of his immediate predecessors, by taking one step forwards and then two backwards.

Tuesday saw the first two fixtures in the fourth round take place, with League One’s Port Vale the first team to reach the last eight of the League Cup, for the first time in their history, after defeating Mansfield Town 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

Also through to the quarter-finals are Middlesbrough who defeat Exeter City 3-2 away from home. The League One hosts took the lead before two quick-fire second-half goals sent Boro ahead. Exeter equalised just after the hour mark but Emmanuel Latte Lath netted an 82nd-minute penalty to win the game.

Eddie Nketiah enjoyed a fruitful weekend after the England striker netted his first Premier League hat-trick in a convincing 5-0 win over bottom club Sheffield United.

Starting again tonight, the 24-year-old has earned the praise of Mikel Arteta who spoke in glowing terms about his striker after their win on Saturday.

“For me, he’s top-level,” Arteta said after the win.

“He has started eight out of the 10 Premier League games. So that tells you how much we trust him, how much I trust him and and the importance that he has in the team.

“I’m really happy for him, an academy player to experience in the Premier League a hat-trick. He needs to enjoy the moment. He fully deserves it and hopefully there are many more to come.

“He’s got an eye for goal. You look at the stats from his last 10 years. What he’s done is remarkable and he needs minutes, opportunities and service and if he gets that, Eddie is going to score goals, that’s for sure.”

Carabao Cup extra time rules: What happens if fourth-round matches end in a draw?

A reminder that tonight’s Carabao Cup ties will go straight to penalties should they finish as a draw after 90 minutes, with extra-time only coming into play from the semi-final stage of the competition.

Premier League leaders Tottenham were knocked out on penalties by Fulham earlier in the tournament after the second-round match finished as a 1-1 draw following 90 minutes at Craven Cottage and those rules will apply again tonight.

In the semi-finals, extra time will be played should the aggregate score be level at the end of the second leg, followed by penalties if required.

The same rules are used for the Carabao Cup final, which is scheduled for 25 February 2024 at Wembley Stadium.

David Moyes: Declan Rice should be ‘welcomed back with open arms’ when West Ham host Arsenal

Rice is starting on the bench tonight but may come on to face his old club for the first time since joining the Gunners for £105million in the summer.

When Declan Rice pictured himself at Arsenal, he tried to imagine how “unusual” a night like tonight would be. After a decade at West Ham, Rice returns to east London for the first time since his £105m move to the Gunners. The Carabao Cup fourth round continues tonight with the remaining teams competing for a place in the quarter-finals.

The draw will take place following the conclusion of Manchester United’s match against Newcastle tonight which is a repeat of last year’s final. Eddie Howe’s men knocked out Manchester City in the third round and will want to triumph over another Manchester team as they target the latter stages.
