West Ham vs Arsenal LIVE: Carabao Cup result and reaction as Kudus and Bowen knock Gunners out

Arsenal have been dumped out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a surprise 3-1 away defeat against West Ham.

West Ham were winless against Arsenal since January 2019 but found themselves ahead after 16 minutes when Ben White headed into his own net from a corner.

Arsenal spurned chances through Eddie Nketiah and Kai Havertz in the first half and were made to pay after the break when Mohammed Kudus extended the lead after a break with a wonderful first touch and finish.

Declan Rice was greeted with boos as he came on for Arsenal but the former West Ham captain could do nothing to prevent Jarrod Bowen from finding a third, with Martin Odegaard's late goal of little consolation as his side suffered an early exit from the cup for the second season running.

Declan Rice’s nightmare West Ham return a result of Arsenal’s complacency

22:05 , Ben Fleming

By the time Declan Rice eventually took to the pitch on his return to West Ham, his rescue mission had become to look like an impossible task. The smattering of boos that greeted the return of only the third West Ham captain in history to lift a major honour were quickly became drowned out by a rapturous roar. Rice had only been on for a matter of moments when Jarrod Bowen’s deflected strike cannoned in off Aaron Ramsdale and with it, Rice’s old club led his new club by three goals. By the end, Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup with barely a whimper.

This was not a happy homecoming for Rice - it was a terrible night for Arsenal, a difficult evening for Ramsdale, and a regretful one Mikel Arteta, whose side were second-best throughout. Rice’s introduction off the bench came too late, as did the arrivals of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard, who fired a consolation goal that was barely even acknowledged in the 95th minute.

Arsenal took this fourth-round tie lightly and were punished: West Ham and David Moyes pulled off their plan and played the occasion well. They thoroughly deserved their place in the quarter-finals.

Arteta takes blame for Arteta’s Carabao Cup exit

22:29 , Jamie Braidwood

Mikel Arteta took the blame for Arsenal’s painful 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat at West Ham.

Arteta made six changes to his line-up for the fourth-round clash, starting with Declan Rice on the bench on his Hammers homecoming.

Rice, who lifted the Europa Conference League trophy as West Ham captain last season, was back at his old club for the first time since his £105million switch to the Gunners.

But he will not be getting his hands on the Carabao Cup this season after strikes from Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen, following an early own goal by Ben White, sent the north Londoners crashing out.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Gunners boss Arteta. “I’m responsible for that, we’re out of the cup, we wanted to play a very different game and compete.

“The game took a direction because of the first goal but we have to see much more from the team and earn the right to win.

“I’m disappointed with myself. We wanted to play in a different way and we weren’t able to do that. Every time we lose the pain is there.

“We have to use this pain and this defeat to prepare the best way for Newcastle on Saturday.”

There was a late consolation for Arsenal with Odegaard’s strike with the last kick of the game:

FULL-TIME: West Ham 3-1 Arsenal

21:24 , Ben Fleming

That Odegaard strike is the final kick of the game as the full-time whistle goes. What a performance from West Ham - especially in that second half - and they have knocked out Arsenal to move into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Arteta’s side couldn’t make their chances stick in the first half and were completely outclassed after the break, with goals from Kudus and Bowen securing a famous win for the Hammers and a tough night for Rice on return to the London Stadium.

GOAL! West Ham 3-1 Arsenal (Odegaard, 90+6 mins)

21:24 , Ben Fleming

Nothing more than a late consolation as Odegaard finds the bottom corner with a well-taken finish.

Too little, too late for Arteta’s side.

Odegaard tries his luck from distance shortly after, but Fabianski gets down well to his right to make the save.

West Ham 3-0 Arsenal

21:10 , Ben Fleming

81 mins: West Ham still look threatening for more as Kudus surges forward, his effort from the edge of the box deflecting behind for a corner.

Before that can be taken West Ham make a change with Ward-Prowse replacing Benrahma.

21:08 , Ben Fleming

80 mins: And Odegaard now does come on with Nketiah the man sacrificed.

West Ham 3-0 Arsenal

West Ham 3-0 Arsenal

21:00 , Ben Fleming

71 mins: Still a smattering of boos every time Rice receives the ball in the middle of the park, but at present that is the least of Arsenal’s concerns. They’ve had just one shot on goal this second half compared to eight in the first half and are now just over 20 minutes away from a disappointing cup exit.

West Ham 3-0 Arsenal

20:54 , Ben Fleming

66 mins: A double change from Arteta as he searches for some way back into this game. The big guns are on now as Saka and Martinelli replace Nelson and Trossard in the forward line.

Declan Rice booed by West Ham fans on return to London Stadium

20:53 , Ben Fleming

Declan Rice was booed by some sections of the West Ham supporters as the England international made his first return to the London Stadium since his £105m move to Arsenal this summer.

Rice, who led West Ham to their first European trophy in 48 years when the Hammers lifted the Europa Conference League last season, became the most expensive English player of all time when he joined Mikel Arteta’s side.

The 24-year-old was brought on as a second-half substitute at the London Stadium and with his new side 2-0 down, following an own goal from Ben White and a stunning second from Mohammed Kudus.

While Rice was warmly applauded as he warmed up on the touchline, the response was rather more mixed as he replaced Jorginho on the 55th-minute mark. There were loud boos within sections of the crowd as Rice took to the field.

West Ham 3-0 Arsenal (Bowen, 60 mins)

20:48 , Ben Fleming

Bowen adds a third and West Ham are cruising into the quarter-finals as things stand!

The ball falls to Bowen on the edge of the box and the Englishman’s strike somehow squirms its way into the net. There’s a slight deflection of Kiwior and Ramsdale is unable to palm the strike away.

A superb second 15 minutes from the Hammers and Arsenal are in deep trouble now.

West Ham 2-0 Arsenal

20:45 , Ben Fleming

57 mins: And that change does now come. Jorginho makes way for Rice, while Tomiyasu is introduced for Zinchenko.

West Ham 2-0 Arsenal

20:43 , Ben Fleming

55 mins: The camera pans to Declan Rice on the Arsenal bench - it can’t be long until Arteta turns to the former West Ham man to try and resurrect their hopes.

West Ham 2-0 Arsenal (Kudus, 50 mins)

20:38 , Ben Fleming

The Hammers double their lead!

It’s a sublime touch from Kudus as he not only controls Aguerd’s long ball but also knocks it past Zinchenko in one motion. The angle is there and the Ghanaian makes no mistake, firing it through Gabriel’s legs and into the far corner.

Arsenal have a mountain to climb now...

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

20:35 , Ben Fleming

46 mins: CHANCE! Without a shot in the first half, West Ham register their first within the first minute of the second half. Paqueta picks the pockets of Jorginho in the middle of the park but Ramsdale does well to make himself big and prevent Bowen’s attempted chip after he was played through by the Brazilian.

KICK-OFF! West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

No changes at the break for either side as Arsenal get us under way for the second half. The visitors need a goal or they’ll be exiting this season’s Carabao Cup at the fourth-round stage.

HALF-TIME: West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

20:18 , Ben Fleming

Two minutes of added time come and go and that’s the half-time whistle. Despite not having a shot on goal, it’s the home side who find themselves in front courtesy of a Ben White own goal from a corner.

Arsenal have huffed and puffed throughout the half but are yet to create anything particularly meaningful, with Fabianski’s save from Havertz’s flicked header perhaps the only time the Pole was called into action throughout the 45 minutes.

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

20:15 , Ben Fleming

44 mins: As we near the half-time break, West Ham still have their one-goal advantage. That despite the fact they are yet to have a shot on goal...

Arsenal, meanwhile, have had eight but just one has been on target.

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

20:09 , Ben Fleming

38 mins: Another chance in swift succession for Arsenal, but Nketiah can’t get over the top of a bouncing ball as his first-time effort on the six-yard box flies over the bar.

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

20:08 , Ben Fleming

36 mins: Nelson has been prominent in these early stages and creates another shooting opportunity as he dribbles into the box. His effort, though, is blocked by one of a sea of West Ham bodies inside the area.

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

20:02 , Ben Fleming

31 mins: The early control that Arsenal had in this game has given way to a more open, end-to-end contest. The visitors win a corner after Nelson’s shot from the edge of the box is deflected behind but it comes to nothing as Havertz’s header goes well wide of the post.

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

19:56 , Ben Fleming

25 mins: CHANCE! Nketiah meets the corner at the near post - unmarked - but his header finds the side netting from a tight angle.

West Ham 1-0 Arsenal

19:55 , Ben Fleming

24 mins: Nelson lines up a free-kick from the other side but White is unable to keep the resulting header down, but a slight deflection means the visitors have a corner.

GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Arsenal (White own goal, 16 mins)

19:46 , Ben Fleming

A gift from West Ham and the home side lead! Bowen’s delivery has plenty of pace on it and White gets his positioning all wrong and heads into his own net at the near post.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

19:45 , Ben Fleming

14 mins: A long throw-in from West Ham presents one of their first attacking chances of the game, but White is alert to the danger and hacks the second ball clear.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

19:40 , Ben Fleming

9 mins: SAVE! Alvarez gives away a cheap free-kick on the left side of the West Ham defence and Nelson’s enticing delivery is met by a deft flick-on from Havertz but Fabianksi is equal to it and tips it over the bar superbly.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

19:37 , Ben Fleming

6 mins: Nelson gets to the byline well, but his low ball across the box is dealt with well by the West Ham defence.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

19:35 , Ben Fleming

5 mins: But a good chance now for West Ham on the break after Paqueta nicked the ball on the halfway line. The Brazilian surges forward but gets his through ball to Bowen all wrong as it drifts out harmlessly for a goal kick.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

19:35 , Ben Fleming

4 mins: A positive start from the away side as they look to impose themselves on the ball in these opening stages. West Ham’s forward line looks particularly fluid with Bowen and Kudus occupying central positions early on.

KICK-OFF! West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

Kick-off fast approaching

West Ham vs Arsenal - pre-match stats

19:16 , Ben Fleming

We’ve got around 15 minutes until kick-off in London so here’s a look at some of the pre-match stats:

  • After eliminating Arsenal the first time they met in the League Cup in 1966-67, West Ham have been eliminated in their last two, both at the quarter-final stage in 1997-98 and 2017-18.

  • In all competitions, Arsenal have lost just two of their last 32 matches against West Ham United (W24 D6), although they squandered a 2-0 lead in their most recent meeting in April to draw 2-2.

  • West Ham have only lost one of their last 10 home League Cup matches (W6 D3), although they were eliminated on penalties in two of those draws, including their most recent game at the London Stadium in November last season against Blackburn (2-2 draw, lost 10-9 on pens).

The eight-month gap that sums up Manchester United’s alarming decline

19:11 , Ben Fleming

Erik ten Hag was dancing on the Wembley turf with Lisandro Martinez and Antony. It was a ritual from their Ajax days when they won a trophy, one that threatened to become a regular sight in England as well. And, amid heady days for Manchester United, winning the club’s first piece of silverware for six years was arguably still not their best result of the week.

Three days before beating Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, United had come from behind to defeat Barcelona. Antony, one of Ten Hag’s pet projects, had scored the decider. And when a seemingly catalytic Casemiro and a rejuvenated Marcus Rashford struck at Wembley, United were challenging for glory on four fronts. They had lost only twice in a run of 31 games, winning 17 of 21. Ten Hag was the Old Trafford alchemist. It was easy to believe he was the best United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson. Despite his natural reserve, the Dutchman gushed about his surroundings. “I just love United,” he said, with the glow of victory at the national stadium.

Eight months on, as two Uniteds reconvene in the same competition, Old Trafford scarcely feels shrouded in romance anymore. There may be more recrimination. There certainly is the now familiar sense of underachievement. Instead of emulating Ferguson, Ten Hag risks following in the footsteps of some of his immediate predecessors, by taking one step forwards and then two backwards.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta: What Eddie Nketiah has done is remarkable

18:57 , Ben Fleming

Eddie Nketiah enjoyed a fruitful weekend after the England striker netted his first Premier League hat-trick in a convincing 5-0 win over bottom club Sheffield United.

Starting again tonight, the 24-year-old has earned the praise of Mikel Arteta who spoke in glowing terms about his striker after their win on Saturday.

“For me, he’s top-level,” Arteta said after the win.

“He has started eight out of the 10 Premier League games. So that tells you how much we trust him, how much I trust him and and the importance that he has in the team.

“I’m really happy for him, an academy player to experience in the Premier League a hat-trick. He needs to enjoy the moment. He fully deserves it and hopefully there are many more to come.

“He’s got an eye for goal. You look at the stats from his last 10 years. What he’s done is remarkable and he needs minutes, opportunities and service and if he gets that, Eddie is going to score goals, that’s for sure.”

Carabao Cup extra time rules: What happens if fourth-round matches end in a draw?

18:52 , Ben Fleming

A reminder that tonight’s Carabao Cup ties will go straight to penalties should they finish as a draw after 90 minutes, with extra-time only coming into play from the semi-final stage of the competition.

Premier League leaders Tottenham were knocked out on penalties by Fulham earlier in the tournament after the second-round match finished as a 1-1 draw following 90 minutes at Craven Cottage and those rules will apply again tonight.

In the semi-finals, extra time will be played should the aggregate score be level at the end of the second leg, followed by penalties if required.

The same rules are used for the Carabao Cup final, which is scheduled for 25 February 2024 at Wembley Stadium.

David Moyes: Declan Rice should be ‘welcomed back with open arms’ when West Ham host Arsenal

18:48 , Ben Fleming

David Moyes expects Declan Rice to be “welcomed with open arms” when he returns to West Ham with Arsenal.

Rice is starting on the bench tonight but may come on to face his old club for the first time since joining the Gunners for £105million in the summer.

The 24-year-old made 245 appearances for West Ham and captained them to victory in the Europa Conference League, the club’s first silverware in 43 years.

“He should be welcomed back with open arms. We’re all looking forward to seeing him again.

“He was a brilliant member of the team. He led the team brilliantly well. He conducted himself impeccably as a West Ham captain and as a player.

“The most important thing was that he gave 100 per cent in every game, even though we sort of knew he probably wasn’t going to stay at West Ham. So all credit to him. He conducted himself brilliantly well and for that alone, he deserves to be cheered.”

Arsenal vs West Ham - confirmed starting line-ups

18:40 , Ben Fleming

A few surprises with the team news but the big news is Declan Rice who starts on the bench in his first game back at the London Stadium since leaving West Ham in the summer.

Jorginho will captain the away side with Aaron Ramsdale returning in between the sticks. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard are on the bench, while Emile Smith Rowe misses out with a knee issue.

West Ham, meanwhile, have named a strong side as they look to reach the quarter-finals of the league cup. Said Benrahma returns on the wing and it looks like Jarrod Bowen will lead the line with both Michail Antonio and Danny Ings on the bench.

Arsenal vs West Ham - confirmed starting line-ups

18:33 , Ben Fleming

West Ham XI: Fabianski; Coufal, Mavropanos, Aguerd, Emerson; Alvarez, Soucek; Kudus, Paqueta, Benrahma; Bowen.

Why Declan Rice returns to West Ham as Arsenal’s ‘Van Dijk’ signing

18:27 , Ben Fleming

When Declan Rice pictured himself at Arsenal, he tried to imagine how “unusual” a night like tonight would be. After a decade at West Ham, Rice returns to east London for the first time since his £105m move to the Gunners. He does so as the most expensive English player of all time and a West Ham legend at 24. Rice’s final West Ham appearance made sure of that: by lifting the Europa Conference League, he became just the third West Ham captain in the club’s history to win a major trophy.

The boy who was released by Chelsea aged 14 grew up at West Ham. He found a home and when he left, he did so as the club’s most established England international since Sir Trevor Brooking, their greatest captain since Bobby Moore and Billy Bonds. He left as an outstanding midfielder who had outgrown the London Stadium, who could have walked into and then improved any side in Europe.

That Rice chose to move across London and join Arsenal may have hurt the club and supporters he says he holds in his heart, which may be why some boos rain down on Wednesday evening, – but his application and commitment to West Ham when his head could have previously been turned, leading to a night of glorious triumph in Prague, ensures he should be “welcomed back with open arms”, as David Moyes put it.

Ahead of tonight’s clash, Jamie Braidwood takes a look at Declan Rice ahead of his return to the London Stadium:

What time is the Carabao Cup draw? Date, time and how to watch

18:18 , Ben Fleming

The Carabao Cup fourth round continues tonight with the remaining teams competing for a place in the quarter-finals.

The draw will take place following the conclusion of Manchester United’s match against Newcastle tonight which is a repeat of last year’s final. Eddie Howe’s men knocked out Manchester City in the third round and will want to triumph over another Manchester team as they target the latter stages.

League One’s Port Vale were the first team to reach the last eight of the League Cup, for the first time in their history, after defeating Mansfield Town on Tuesday evening, while an 83rd-minute penalty earned Middlesbrough a 3-2 victory away at Exeter.

There are plenty of Premier League sides in action tonight as Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all attempt to reach the quarter-finals.

The draw for the last eight is expected to take place at the conclusion of Man Utd vs Newcastle so here’s everything you need to know:
