We're Probably Going to Become Cannibals This Year, According to Nostradamus

  • In 1555, Nostradamus published a book with 942 prophesies for the future.

  • Among his many predictions, the astrologer believed a struggling economy may lead some to cannibalism in 2023.

  • Nostradamus’s prediction of a fiery Mars has received newfound interest in light of our current fascination with the Red Planet.

The French astrologer Michel de Nostradame, better known as Nostradamus, famously made 942 prophesies in his 1555 book, Les Propheties. Because he threw so many predictions at the wall, a few of them were bound to stick: Believers have credited Nostradamus with correctly forecasting Hitler’s ascendance, JFK’s assassination, and the 9/11 attacks, among other events of huge historical importance.

Now, for his latest trick, the long-dead prophet says 2023 is shaping up to be a doozy of a year, which may include great floods, fires on Mars, and some casual cannibalism, for good measure.

Obvious caveat: Nostradamus’s prophesies, which he dropped in four-line poems, were extremely generic. The guy loved warning us about the rise of powers, growing conflicts, and natural disasters, so it’s easy to loosely interpret his doom-and-gloom predictions to fit whatever current narrative is most convenient.

Nevertheless, in 1555, Nostradamus warned to expect a “celestial fire when the lights of Mars will go out.” While that hasn’t yet happened, as Elon Musk inches closer to colonizing Mars, it’s clearly only a matter of time until humans arrive on the Red Planet and the whole thing blows up, per Nostradamus’s forecast.

Elsewhere, Nostradamus may want governments of the world to do something about the economy so that we don’t all resort to eating each other. His prose warns that when the price of wheat rises high—something that could conceivably happen in, say, a global recession like the one we’re possibly facing—“man will be eating his fellow man” in despair. So that’s fun.

Meanwhile, when it comes to natural disasters, Nostradamus predicted that the “dry earth will grow more parched, and there will be great floods when the rainbow is seen.” Other vague predictions include, but are not limited to, great wars and dreadful horrors that include broken agreements.

Unfortunately, continued civil unrest and ongoing wars fall into all those categories. And if history is any predictor—Nostradamus aside—you can probably expect 2023 to carry more discord. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn all us into Hannibal Lecter.
