Wellsville school bus involved in crash. Students, driver taken to Jones Memorial Hospital

A Wellsville school bus transporting nearly two dozen students to the secondary school was involved in a two-vehicle crash Monday morning, the school district said.

No one on the bus was seriously injured, officials said. Police said the driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries following the 7:20 a.m. crash.

In a statement, Allegany County's largest public school district said, “This morning, there was an accident involving a Wellsville Central School District bus that was transporting secondary students to the Secondary School.

"The bus number was 156 on route 7. As a precaution, the driver and students are being transported to Jones Memorial Hospital (in Wellsville).”

Jones Memorial said 20 patients, including 19 students and the bus driver, were treated at the hospital and released.

School officials said, "All parents and guardians of students involved in the accident this morning have been notified directly by phone calls from administrators."

The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, Jones Memorial said.

Amity-based New York State Police said the collision occurred while the bus was traveling on state Route 19, near Weidrick Road, and it was struck.

Troopers said the driver of the other vehicle sustained serious injuries.

Jeff Luckey, Allegany County Emergency management director, said a “mass casualty incident” was declared, based on the number of patients.

Multiple police and rescue agencies responded to the crash, some with heavy equipment, according to reports. Luckey said ten ambulances were called to the scene.

The Wellsville Fire Department and the Wellsville Ambulance Corps were the lead rescue agencies.

More details will be released as the investigation continues, State Police said.
