Wellmania Cancelled at Netflix After One Season, Star Celeste Barber Reveals: ‘This Industry Is Kind of Bulls–t’

Netflix will not be making a return trip to Wellmania. The series has been cancelled after one season, star and executive producer Celeste Barber has revealed in an emotional Instagram video.

“I just wanted to check in and give you a little update to let you know that Wellmania will not be renewed for another season,” Barber’s message begins. “I understand that in the grand scheme of things, with what is going on in the world at the moment, who f–king cares? But a lot of you do care. A lot of you are still asking me about it. We found out yesterday that it’s not going to be renewed. Netflix says it’s something about numbers. Sure. I thought it smashed it, but I don’t understand how it works.”

Based on the book Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness, the eight-episode series followed Barber as “human tornado and food critic” Liv Healy, who is chosen to be a judge on TV’s newest food competition show, only to end up stuck at home in Australia after receiving a “catastrophic” health diagnosis and losing her green card. “Looking for the quickest route back to New York, she throws herself body-first into a radical wellness journey, hell-bent on getting well to get home,” per the official synopsis.

Barber goes on to thank fans “for the love and support around the show.” She says, “I’m bummed that I can no longer explore that excellent character of Liv Healy, and I know a lot of you have said to me that you saw yourselves in that character and wanted to see more of her. But this industry is kind of bulls–t.”

Her recommendation for coping with the show’s cancellation? “Go and kiss your babies and watch Friends,” she says. “Maybe not on Netflix, though. Maybe pull out an old DVD.”

Wellmania also starred JJ Fong as Liv’s best friend Amy, Johnny Carr as Amy’s husband Doug, Lachlan Buchanan as Liv’s younger brother Gaz, Remy Hii as Gaz’s fiancé Dalbert, Genevieve Mooy as Liv’s mother Lorraine and Alexander Hodge as Liv’s love interest Isaac.
