What to do this weekend: George Michael Reborn, Father’s Day fun, Indiana Jones at WAM

Bob Watts

Father’s Day weekend has arrived, and some venues are putting on special events like concerts and car shows.

The entertainment calendar in Wichita also includes the Wichita Art Museum’s “Indiana Jones”- themed Tunes + Tallgrass event as well as a performance at the Orpheum by a rather convincing George Michael tribute artist.

Here’s a list of some of the fun activities happening in and around Wichita this weekend and into next week:

George Michael at Orpheum

7:30 p.m. Saturday, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway

George Michael fans will never get to see the singer perform live again, but they can get the next best thing with performer Robert Bartko and his “George Michael Reborn” show, which arrives at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday. Bartko, who was told most of his life that he looked and sounded like George Michael, eventually set his own music career aside to perform as Michael, which he enjoys much more, he said. Though his act is focused on the “Faith” era of Michael’s career, it includes hits from his early days with Wham! — including “Careless Whisper.” The show is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 to $45 at www.selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-SEAT or in person at the Select-A-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.

Tunes + Tallgrass at WAM

7:30 p.m. Friday, Wichita Art Museum Art Garden, 1400 Museum Blvd.

The Wichita Art Museum and Tallgrass Film Association are teaming up for another Tunes + Tallgrass event, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the museum’s outdoor art garden. The evening will start with a concert by 1980s cover band The Echoes followed by a 9 p.m. screening of the 1981 Indiana Jones classic “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets. They can pack a picnic or get “light bites” from the museum’s restaurant, 1400 By Elderslie. Drinks will be available at a cash bar. Admission is free.

Father’s Day Car Show

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555

The Sedgwick County Zoo is once again putting on its annual Father’s Day car show, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The show will feature classic and antique cars plus modern models set up inside the zoo gates. Awards will be given out in categories like best 1970s car, best lowrider, best Ford, best GM and more. Dads will be admitted free to the zoo with one paid admission on Sunday. For more information, visit scz.org/event/fathers-day-car-show

Bluesy country at The Cotillion

8 p.m. Sunday, the Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg

Charley Crockett, a blues and country singer from Texas, will be performing songs from his catalog as well as from his latest album, “The Man from Waco,” when he stops at the Cotillion on Sunday. His opening act will be Americana singer Wyatt Flores. The show starts at 8 p.m. but doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 at thecotillion.com, and the concert is open to all ages.

James McMurtry at Wave

8 p.m. Friday, Wave, 850 E. Second

Singer/songwriter James McMurtry will perform on Friday at Wave, the outdoor music venue at Second and St. Francis. McMurtry, the son of “Lonesome Dove” author Larry McMurty, will perform at 8 p.m., and the doors will open at 7 p.m. McMurtry’s best-known songs include “Childish Things” and “Choctaw Bingo.” Tickets to the show are $25 at waveict.com

Music under the trees

Bartlett Arboretum, Belle Plaine, 4 p.m. Sunday, and Dyck Arboretum, Hesston, 7 p.m. Thursday

If you like trees and you like music, you have the chance to catch two local bands performing at the area’s two arboretums. On Sunday, Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine will continue its Treehouse Concert Series with a show by Dustin Arbuckle and the Damnations. The Father’s Day-themed show starts at 4 p.m., and attendees can buy their fathers barbecue from Lyon’s Den, which will be serving on site. Admission is $15 at the gate. Then on Thursday, Dyck Arboretum of the Plains in Hesston will wrap up its Summer Music Nights series with a show by Wichita band Sometimes on Sunday. Attendees should bring lawn chairs, and they can buy food provided by Boy Scout Pack 112 from 6 to 7 p.m. The music starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, though donations are welcome.
