Week in Sports: Eddy County baseball and softball teams head north for championship glory
Eddy County baseball and softball teams defeated the opposition in the opening rounds of the state tournament last week. All teams are seeking to bring back state titles to Carlsbad, Loving and Artesia with trips to Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
Cavemen baseball holds off Centennial for quarterfinals
At 10 a.m. Wednesday in Albuquerque, Carlsbad faces Rio Rancho in the second round of the 5A state baseball tournament.
The No. 7 seeded Cavemen shutout Las Cruces Centennial 4-0 in the first game of a best-of-three series in Carlsbad Friday.
Carlsbad held off a late charge by the Hawks on Saturday to win the series.
The Rams are the No. 2 seed in the tournament and swept Clovis.
Cavegirls look for three-peat
At 11 a.m. Thursday at Rio Rancho Cleveland High School, Carlsbad faces Las Cruces Centennial in the first game of the championship round of the 5A state softball tournament.
Double-elimination rules are in effect for the remaining eight teams in the tournament. Carlsbad is the No. 6 seed and Centennial is the No. 3 seed.
The Cavegirls are back-to-back 5A state champions.
Loving Falcons baseball back in action after week off
At 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Albuquerque, the Falcons face Rehoboth Christian in the quarterfinals of the 2A state tournament.
The Falcons are the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and face the No. 7 seed that defeated Laguna.
Loving had a bye in last week’s opening round.
Loving High softball No. 2 seed in state playoffs
At 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rio Rancho Cleveland High School, Loving faces either Lordsburg or Jal on the opening day of the 1A/2A playoffs.
The tournament is double elimination.

Artesia baseball prepares for game against St. Pius X
At 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Albuquerque, the No. 5 seed Bulldogs face the No. 4 seed Sartans.
Artesia scored 30 runs during last week’s opening series against Santa Teresa.
St. Pius X defeated Chaparral in the opening round.
Artesia softball faces St. Pius X
At 9 a.m. Thursday at Rio Rancho Cleveland High School, Artesia, the No. 4 seed faces No. 5 St. Pius.
The tournament is double elimination.
