Week 9 Top Performers: Ranger wrestler earns league title; Hornet wrestler stays unbeaten

HILLSDALE COUNTY — This is our recap of some of the top performers from Week 9 of the winter prep sports season.

Isaac Westfall wins an individual conference title

Reading freshman Isaac Westfall battled in the 215-weight class at the Big 8 conference championship meet held at Reading High School.

He won his weight class, earning the gold medal and all-conference honors. He earned a pinfall in the quarterfinals, a medical forfeit with a 21-10 points lead and an 8-6 decision in the finals.

Teammates Reid Westfall (106) and Lukas Strine (175) both earned second place medals and all-conference honors. Austin Neely (285) and Dylan McCallister (113) earned third place.

Comet trio earns second place at Cascades Conference Championship

The Jonesville Comets competed in their first Cascades Conference Championship. The varsity Comets were not able to win the overall championship, but several individual wrestlers medaled in their respective weight classes.

Carson Playford (132), Tyler Milks (138) and Evan McColley (215) all placed second in their weight classes.

Taking third overall was Isaac Shively (190) and Harrison Packer (106). Cooper Stevens (285) placed fourth. Each wrestler earned all-conference honors.

John Petersen stays undefeated heading into Team Districts

Hillsdale junior 215-pound wrestler John Petersen has won his way to two invitational first place medals and a current undefeated season in his weight class. He continued that streak during the Hornets' conference championship duals. He had a 6-2 decision win, a 14-0 major decision win, three pinfall wins and two void wins.

His brother, senior Stephen Petersen (190), also went undefeated during the championship team tournament.

Conroy leads Camden-Frontier to first win of the season

The Camden-Frontier varsity boys basketball team got their first win of the season after a 58-35 final at home against Tekonsha. Leading the way for Camden-Frontier was junior Kaiden Conroy. Conroy had 31 points, including eight 3-pointers.

Against Litchfield, Conroy had 14 points.

Slade leads WCA boys hoops to back-to-back wins

The Will Carleton Academy boys basketball team improved to 10-7 overall this season with two victories, including a 68-40 win on Homecoming night against Pansophia Academy. Tyler Slade had 25 total points over the course of the two wins to lead the Cougars.

Miller leads Litchfield girls hoops to rivalry win over Camden-Frontier

Litchfield senior Jenna Miller led the Terriers girls basketball team to a 37-24 win over rival Camden-Frontier to snap a three-game losing streak. Miller led the team with eight points, two assists and 13 rebounds.

Burk leads Waldron to win over Jackson Christian

Spartan senior Morgan Burk led the Waldron girls basketball team to a 35-20 win over Jackson Chrisitan. Burk had 20 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Connor McKay leads North Adams-Jerome to win over Pansophia Academy

Junior Ram Connor McKay led the North Adams-Jerome boys basketball team to a 54-13 win over Pansophia Academy. McKay had a double-double of 22 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals.

Ervans leads Reading girls basketball through impressive Week 9

The Ranger girls basketball team nearly went 3-0 during the week with wins over Union City (56-43) and Litchfield (62-35). They nearly beat Springport in a close 44-41 final. Ervans had a total of 42 points through three matches and a total of 18 rebounds.

Teammate Abby Affholter had a total of 24 rebounds over three games and had 10 points against Union City.

Trio of Comet hoops players lead boys basketball to 2-0 week

Seniors Warrick Elder and Gavin Van Kampen had 28 and 25 points, respectively, during Week 9 in wins against Addison and Manchester. Freshman Caleb Blonde had 15 points against Addison.

For the Comet girls basketball team, Korra Estel led the team with 10 points against Columbia Central. Haley Mach led the team with 11 points against Addison. Senior Lyra Nichols had 13 points and 11 rebounds through two games.

Mallar leads Pittsford past Hillsdale Academy to take outright SCAA East lead

Ava Mallar led the Pittsford girls basketball team to a 33-21 victory on their home court against rival Hillsdale Academy. The win secured the outright lead of their division. The junior guard had 27 points, including five 3-pointers.

Scharer brothers lead Hillsdale Academy to back-to-back wins

Hillsdale Academy boys basketball earned two more important wins to continue their undefeated regular season against divisional opponents.

In their win against Colon, Dominic Scharer had 15 points. Against Pittsford, Dawson Scharer led the team with 12 points in a tough fought defensive victory.

Carden and Payne combine for 6 triples in win over Burr Oak

Pittsford boys basketball seniors Mason Payne and Gavyn Carden combined to hit for six triples in their 65-49 win over Burr Oak. Both seniors had 20 points in the victory. Against Hillsdale Academy, Payne had 11 points to lead the Wildcats. Carden earned nine points. Both seniors had two triples in the game.

Bills and Alvarez lead Terrier boys hoops to two wins

The Litchfield Terriers added a 63-49 win over Athens and a 73-44 win over Camden-Frontier to their win total for the season. Leading the way in game one against Athens was senior Tyler Bills, scoring 27 and hitting two six triples. Senior Junior Alvarez had 16 points.

Against Camden-Frontier, Alvarez had 26 points, including multiple triples. Bills had 18 points.

Ra'Kell Brown leads Hornet girls hoops to victory

Hillsdale junior Ra'Kell Brown led the Hornet girls varsity basketball team to a 63-43 win over Onsted. The junior had a double-double of 17 points and 18 rebounds. Senior Rylee Miller had 15 points and three triples. Senior Karsyn Stebbins had 11 points.

For the Hornet boys basketball team, senior Jack Bowles had 43 points in two games.

Jonesville boys bowling beats Leslie and competes at Trojan Invitational

The varsity boys team did earned a win over Leslie, 29-1. Leading the way in that matchup was Andrew Sackett with a 378 series and Matt Woodruff with a 414 series.

At the Sturgis Invitational, the Comets had a baker series total of 2,903 pins knocked down. They qualified for the semifinal round of the knockout stage of the tournament, losing to Kearsley. They won the consolation final against Bronson, bowling baker games of 189, 145, 155 and 168.

Leading the Individual scores for the Comets was Kyle Covey who bowled a 363 series. Marshall Baker bowled a 304 series.

Manifold and Van Heerde lead Hornet girls bowling to win over Adrian Madison and 3rd at jamboree

The Hillsdale varsity girls bowling team won 23-7 over Adrian Madison to start Week 9. Shalee Van Heerde bowled a 186 game and a 327 series, picking up a 5/7 split and 1/2/10 split along the way. Chloe Manifold had a 199 game and a 359 series. Alex Portteus led the boys team with a 235-173-403 series.

At the Adrian Madison weekend jamboree, the varsity girls bowling team took third behind another impressive day from Manifold and Van Heerde. Manifold had a 208 game and a 369 series. Van Heerde bowled a 332 series. The boys took fourth, led by Portteus with a 221 game and a 368 series. He picked up a slop shot of 3,4,6,7,10 split. Charles Macy had a 343 series. Nolan Grant had a 315 series.
