Wednesday Roundup: New Lex, Tri-Valley baseball continue winning ways

COSHOCTON — Isaac McGill ripped a two-run double and Drew Barnette added a RBI single in a four-run first inning, as New Lexington baseball downed Coshocton 8-4 to keep control of the Muskingum Valley League Small School Division on Wednesday.

McGill struck out seven, walked three and gave up four runs on two hits in four innings for the victory, while Nathan Gottke tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the Panthers (12-2, 10-1).

McGill also had two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs, Garrett Blosser, Clay Miller and Jonathan Dold had two hits and Mason Pyle and Lane Baker also scored twice for New Lex.

Gage Wright had a single with two RBIs, Bentley Cunningham added a single, a RBI and two runs scored and Jace Dickerson also had a hit for the Redskins (3-12, 3-8), while Calan Shaw took the loss, giving up four runs on three hits in one inning of work.

Tri-Valley 4, John Glenn 3: Kian Drummonds delivered a two-run single with two outs in the fifth, which proved to be the decisive hit for the Scotties (12-1, 10-0) against the Muskies in Big School action.

Draven Spinks earned the victory, giving up two unearned runs on five hits, fanning five and walking three in 5 2/3 innings. Kade Hindel got the final four outs to earn the save, while Kyler Brennen and Ethan McClellan hit a single with a RBI each.

Wylee Woodard and Roman Gallitz had two hits apiece, Noah Winland and Kris Wise had singles with a RBI and Gallitz went the distance in the loss, scattering six hits and allowing four unearned runs for John Glenn (2-11, 2-7).

Sheridan 5, Maysville 4: Caden Sheridan had a double and two RBIs, as the Generals (15-2, 9-2) bounced back with a win over the Panthers (4-8, 3-7).

AJ Winders chipped in two singles and three runs scored, and Monty Eden earned the complete game win, giving up four unearned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.

Ryan Parmer doubled with a RBI, Tyler Debolt had a single and a RBI and Coen Fink also doubled for the Maysville offense, while Parmer surrendered five runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in six innings to suffer the loss.

Rosecrans 15, Berne Union 5: Hayden Perdue collected three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored and Preston Farrell also had three hits in a Mid-State League win for the Bishops (10-3).

Coen Grandstaff added two hits and four runs scored, Brendan Bernath hit two singles and scored three times and Mikey Burkhart singled with two RBIs for the Rosecrans offense.

Burkhart also earned the win, giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Zanesville 12, Northridge 1 (6 inn.): Tyson Kimble hit three singles and scored three times and Noah Darnes singled with three RBIs to highlight the Blue Devils' win in Licking County League play.

Solomon Norris hit a triple and a single and scored twice, Mahki Murray scored three runs and Canon Mercer added two singles and two runs scored for Zanesville (4-10-1).

Evan McBride went the distance for the victory, striking out six in a three-hitter.

Philo 10, Crooksville 0 (6 inn.): Clayton Colborn went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Eric Durant tripled, singled, drove in two runs and scored twice to highlight the Electrics' win.

Masen Runkle and Spencer Shook chipped in two hits and a RBI, Garrett Tom doubled with a RBI and two runs scored, and Cooper Radcliffe tossed four scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts for Philo (5-9-1, 4-7).

Eli Sprankle had two of the Ceramics' four hits and Gavin Mount gave up four runs on eight hits in five innings to take the loss for Crooksville (2-11, 2-8).

Crooksville defeated River View 13-12 in 11 innings to complete a suspended game on Monday. Mount had four hits and three RBIs, Kole Dennis added four hits and four runs scored and scored the winning run on a wild pitch, and Brady Cottrell also had four hits.

Mack Wilson collected three hits and four RBIs and Maguire Werntz chipped in three hits for the Black Bears.

Softball

Sheridan 16, Maysville 0 (5 inn.): Winning pitcher Megan Ranck had eight strikeouts and swatted a pair of doubles with a single and three RBIs to pace the Generals (14-3, 8-2) in a MVL Big School win.

Hailey Mueller belted her first career varsity home run to go with a double and four RBIs, Hayley Clifton singled and Avery Mueller, Mauri O'Brien, Mylie Forgrave and Addison Grosse each doubled in the win.

Haylee Cornett allowed 10 runs in 1 2/3 innings and had one of the Panthers' hits.

Edison 8, Cambridge 3: The Bobcats absorbed their second straight loss Wednesday with the setback to the Panthers.

Cambridge jumped in front 1-0, before Edison pulled away with four runs in the third inning and two in each the fifth and sixth innings to take control.

Laney Harper paced the Bobcats' seven hit attack with a pair of singles. Abby Roth and Ebanie Ruiz each banged out RBI base hits for the Bobcats who slipped to 11-4 on the year.

Abby Mann went the distance in the pitching circle for Cambridge, giving up 14 hits and seven earned runs. Mann finished with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Philo 13, Crooksville 1 (5 inn.): Megan Tom and Caitlin Rose each drove in three runs, as the Electrics (7-7, 6-3) downed the Ceramics in a completion of a suspended game.

Karlee Southall added a triple, two singles and two runs scored, Rose doubled and singled with two runs scored, Bri Wolfe also had a double, a single and three runs scored, Tom doubled and singled, Sophie Saunders hit a triple and a single with two RBIs and Kyleigh McGraw doubled and knocked in two runs for Philo.

Cassidy Himes tossed a three-hitter to earn the win, while Lexi Saffell allowed nine runs on eight hits in one inning to take the loss.

Rylee Chamberlin singled with a RBI, Brynn Lundell hit a double and Madison Goodin singled for Crooksville (9-7, 4-6).

Ridgewood 5, Tusky Valley 2: Tarryn Morris' line drive was played into an error, allowing the go-ahead run to score, as the Generals used a three-run sixth to earn an IVC win.

Emma Rettos, Maggie Shannon and Morris all had a hit and a RBI and Addison Lahmers had a single and earned the win in relief with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Kaydence Lahna went the first five, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five.

New Lex 7, Logan 6: Makenzy McCoy capped a six-run fourth with a two-run double as the Panthers (7-8) picked up a road win.

Abby Wilson and Mia Metzger also had run-scoring hits in that frame, as McCoy finished with three RBIs, Jorja Burkhart went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, and Metzger had two hits and two RBIs.

Metzger also picked up the win with four scoreless innings of relief, scattering three hits and striking out a pair.

Berne Union 18, Rosecrans 8 (6 inn.): Emily Jenkins swatted a home run and a double and drove in five runs, but the Bishops watched the Rockets earned a comeback win.

Kate Ward added a double, a single and three RBIs, Kerry Thompson singled with two runs scored and Dakota Householder took the loss after surrendering 13 runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Northridge 24, Zanesville 2 (5 inn.): Miyha Gladden had two of the Lady Devils' hits, and Brooklyn King and Jayden Spencer had hits with RBIs in a LCL loss.

Boys Tennis

Cambridge second in OVAC tennis: The Bobcats tennis team used a strong showing to stand in runner-up spot in the small school division of OVAC Tennis Championships at John Marshall High School.

During action Wednesday, the CHS doubles teams accumulated five points, a point for each win, and sit in second place behind Linsly in the small school division after the first day of the two-day championship.

Blade Bachman and Caleb Stanberry teamed up to upend St. Clairsville’s Trauten and Kootz before losing 1-8 to University’s Andrew McClellan and Kalman Nagy, the eventual champions.

In second doubles, Markel Villapalos and James Goggin defeated Weir’s Runkel and Diaz 8-2, defeated University’s McLaren and Minchau 8-4, and downed Morgantown’s Tian-Chin and Kreines 9-7 to advance to the championship match.

In the championship, Villapalos and Goggin lost to Linsly’s Boyd and Donahue, 3-8.

The third doubles team of Smith Sylvis and Baylon Rose defeated Steubenville Catholic Central’s Irvin and Irvin 8-3 before dropping their next match 3-8 to Linsly’s Lou and Fernandez.

Golf Leagues looking for players: Some area leagues are looking for players as leagues get started.

The Thursday morning Zanesville Friends Women’s League is looking for golfers. The league begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at Green Valley Golf Club. This league is different from most leagues as you do not have to be there every week, play when you can be there. If interested, contact Donna Middaugh at 740-683-1841 or Green Valley Golf Club at 740-452-7105.

The Tuesday night MHPCC Ladies League at Green Valley Golf Club is looking for players. If you are a single and looking to join a team, please call the Clubhouse at 740-452-7105. The league will begin play on May 7.
