Wednesday Update On Josh Rosen’s Future In The NFL

On Tuesday, the San Fransisco 49ers released former first-round quarterback Josh Rosen, marking the end of his time on his fourth team in the NFL. Just a days later, the 24-year-old has a better idea of what his future holds.

Rosen went unclaimed on waivers since his release on Tuesday, meaning that all 32 teams passed on plucking him off of the wire. Since that was the case, he’ll officially enter free agency, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

Not getting selected off of waivers isn’t a great sign for Rosen and casts doubt that he’ll land with his fifth team in four years anytime soon. He may have to wait until a team grows needy at quarterback or is willing to bring him on in a practice squad role like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did in 2020.

It’s certainly not the outcome that Rosen hoped for when he began his career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018, but the former No. 10 overall quarterback will have to scrap his way back onto a team and try to salvage his time in the NFL.

Rosen had joined the 49ers in December of last year, following injuries to both Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Mullens. He entered training camp this year in a battle for the third quarterback spot on San Fransisco’s depth chart with Nate Sudfeld. Kyle Shanahan and the team’s coaching staff clearly wanted to move forward without Rosen and let him go this week.

Rosen did play quite a bit in San Fransisco’s first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend. He ended his outing 10-for-15, throwing for 93 yards and one interception.

Since coming into the league in 2018 out of UCLA, Rosen has been dealt a tough hand. He was traded from the Cardinals to the Dolphins after his first season when the team drafted Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick. He lasted just one season in Miami before the franchise took Tua Tagovailoa in the first round of the 2020 draft. Since then, he hasn’t been able to nab any significant playing time anywhere.

In 20 games played, Rosen has completed 54.8 percent of his passes for 2,845 yards, 12 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He’s posted a 3-13 record as a starter.

At just 24 years old, Rosen’s best playing days aren’t behind him just yet, but he will need somewhat of a miracle to get another opportunity to start in the NFL.
