The city of Kings Mountain was forced to shut down its 150th birthday bash Saturday after rain and thunderstorms rolled in around noon.

Rodney Hinson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said rainfall varied according to the location but there was anywhere from four and a half inches of rain in the upper end of the county to half an inch near the state line. Hinson said Sunday had some precipitation but not as much, with anywhere from half an inch in the Shelby area to one hundreth of an inch north and south.

The birthday celebration, which included a car show, live music, rides and vendors, was canceled.

"After hours of watching the radar, discussing the weather with bands and vendors while hoping for the best, the decision has been made to cancel the KM 150th Celebration. We are heartbroken as I am sure you are. Weather can’t be controlled. We must put the safety of our citizens first," a post read on the city of Kings Mountain Tourism and Events Facebook page.

Perry Davis, Cleveland County emergency management director, said the storms didn't bring any reported damage, other than some trees in the roadway.

Hinson said people can expect an active weather week with changes of rain almost every day.
