Watertown edges Aberdeen Central for second in ESD; Roncalli captures Region 1A title

YANKTON — Mitchell repeated as the Eastern South Dakota Conference girls golf champion on Thursday with a different individual medalist.

The Kernels topped the nine-team field with a 323 at the Fox Run Golf Course. Watertown edged Aberdeen Central by two shots (332 to 334) for second place.

Maddie Childs of Mitchell shot a 2-over par 74 to win medalist honors over teammate and defending champion Allison Meyerink.

Mitchell, Watertown and Aberdeen Central are expected to wage a three-team battle for the state Class AA title on June 3-4 at the Hillcrest Golf and Country Club in Yankton.

"The girls played well today. Anytime you can get four players inside the top 15, it's a great day," Watertown head coach Corey Neale said. "We're proud of finishing in second today and it shows that at the state tournament, we have the ability to win it."

Region 1A

GROTON — Grace Seyer took medalist honors with a 16-over 88 and led Aberdeen Roncalli to a one-shot victory in the team race on Thursday in the Region 1A high school girls golf tournament at the Olive Grove Golf Course.

Seyer won the individual title by one shot over Carly Guthmiller of Groton Area. Roncalli finished with a team score of 379.

The top three teams and 18 indiviuals qualified for the state Class A girls tournament June 3-4 at Bakker Crossing Golf Course in Sioux Falls.
