An epic period drama, Shōgun, set in feudal Japan, is coming next month.

The name comes from the Japanese title shogun, given to military rulers of Japan from 1192 until 1867. Here's everything we know about Shōgun, the TV show:

It's a historical drama set in feudal Japan

The story follows daimyo Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), who is fighting for his life after the Council of Regents has united against him. Soon, a mysterious European ship with an English pilot, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), is found in a nearby village.

Per the official description, the ship "comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father."

The show is based on James Clavell's bestselling novel.

Clavell's novel, published in 1975, is set in 1600, following Englishman John Blackthorne, who is lost at sea. When he awakens, he is in Japan—a place few Europeans have ever been to. Per the publihser, "Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed."

It was previously adapted in a TV show in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain.

The show features an all-star Japanese cast.
