Netflix has released the first trailer for The Kitchen, which marks Daniel Kaluuya's directorial debut.

Kaluuya co-directed the dystopian sci-fi with Kibwe Tavares and also co-wrote the movie with Joe Murtagh. It's based on an idea that Kaluuya, Tavares and producer Daniel Emmerson came up with in a barber shop a decade ago.

As shown in the trailer, The Kitchen takes place in a future version of London in around 20 years' time where the gap between the rich and poor has been stretched to the limits, with all social housing eradicated.

All that remains is "The Kitchen", a community that refuses to move out of their home. Izi (played by Top Boy star Kane Robinson) is one such resident and together with 12-year-old Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman), the pair struggle in a system stacked against them.

The Kitchen will be released in select UK cinemas on January 12, 2024 before arriving on Netflix on January 19, 2024, so you've already got something for your watch list in the new year.

The movie also stars former Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright as pirate radio station DJ, Lord Kitchener, alongside Hope Ikpoku Jr, BackRoad Gee, Cristale, Teija Kabs and Demmy Ladipo.

Following its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October, The Kitchen stands at a strong 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first reviews.

"A genuine vision of a nightmarish, dystopian future that will ring alarm bells for any city-dweller familiar with the depressing effects of gentrification," wrote Deadline in one of several positive reviews.

IndieWire noted: "If the relationship drama at its core doesn't fully connect with the elegant brutalism of its visual language, there is, nevertheless, a lot to admire in both aspects."

The Kitchen is released in select UK cinemas on January 12, 2024 and on Netflix on January 19, 2024.
