A team of students at the University of Stuttgart achieved a world record for fastest-accelerating electric vehicle with its custom-built racing car, according to a video published by the team last week.

GreenTeam Uni Stuttgart was able to achieve a sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 1.461 seconds, making it the quickest-accelerating electric car on the planet, as sanctioned by Guinness.

Founded in 2009, the team has been developing an electric Formula Student (similar to FSAE here in the States) for over a decade. Its car is all-wheel drive and made mostly from carbon fiber. According to the team's site, it also has in-house-developed wheel hub motors, an air-cooled battery, and 3D-printed hubs. In addition to the world record, the car took home two wins at events across Europe during the 2020/2021 Formula Student season, enough to earn it a first-place finish in the series.

Video from the run shows the car doing a burnout for each axle before performing an exceedingly short and undramatic run to 62 mph, solidifying itself in the record books. If electric cars of the future promise this type of acceleration, we're all for it.
