What to Watch Thursday: Derek Jeter documentary ‘The Captain’ continues

Here’s what to watch tonight

The Captain (9 p.m., ESPN)

Tonight we get Parts 3 and 4 of the engrossing new seven-part documentary series about legendary New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter.

The series, directed by Emmy-winner Randy Wilkins, premiered last week with the first two episodes (airing on Monday and Thursday). If you missed Parts 1 and 2, they’ll repeat tonight starting at 7 p.m. New episodes premiere each Thursday night.

Jeter is “the face of the New York Yankees, a five-time World Series champion, the most popular and admired player in baseball, and one of the great sports superstars of any age” — and Wilkins’ docuseries tells the story of his life and Hall of Fame career anchored by candid interviews with Jeter, his family (his wife, mom, dad and sister), former teammates and contemporaries, former New York sports journalists and more.

Included are interviews with Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettite, Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez, Alfonso Soriano, Don Mattingly, Darryl Strawberry and Jorge Posada, Roger Clemens, Willie Randolph, CC Sabathia and many others.

Episode 3 (9 pm) focuses on the importance of loyalty and trust to Jeter as the Yankees cap off a three-peat beating the New York Mets, and his friendship with Alex Rodriguez is changed. (Also hoping we get more about his tense relationship with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.)

Episode 4 (10 pm): The Yankees Dynasty ends and the documentary explores 9/11’s impact on New York. The Yankees and Boston Red Sox’s ancient blood feud is decided in an epic Game 7. Team dynamics change with the addition of new players and personalities.
