What to Watch Sunday: Season 5 premiere of ‘Yellowstone’ (& a Season 1-4 recap)

PARAMOUNT

Here’s what to watch tonight.

Yellowstone (8 p.m., Paramount)

Season 5 of the hit western drama premieres tonight with two new back-to-back episodes. In the first, John Dutton is sworn in as Governor of Montana, and as he settles into the power of his new office, he makes a bold move to protect the Yellowstone Ranch from his opponents. In Episode 2, John makes a passionate speech to the state of Montana while a new formidable opponent from Market Equities arrives in the state. Meanwhile, the cowboys at the ranch deal with a new problem.

“Yellowstone” has been an insanely popular series with the Season 4 premiere getting more than 14 million total viewers and the finale topping 15 million. It chronicles the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who “controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.”

In addition to Costner, the series also stars Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and others.

Yellowstone prequels: The “Yellowstone” universe has expanded with a prequel called “1883,” which stars Sam Elliott and started off following Dutton family members as they migrated across the U.S. from Tennessee to Montana during the 19th century. Next up is “1923” (previously called 1932”), which will star Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. That series will follow the family as they build the Dutton Ranch, covering an era that included droughts, the end of Prohibition in the state and the end of World War I. “1923” will debut on the streaming service Paramount+ in December, which is where you can watch “1883.” Series creator Taylor Sheridan has hinted that there are other prequels and spinoffs to come.

Michelle Obama: The Light We Carry -- A Conversation with Robin Roberts (10 p.m., ABC)

The former first lady Michelle Obama talks candidly with Robin Roberts about her marriage, the pandemic, coping with low-grade depression, President Joe Biden and her new hobby. Included is a kitchen table conversation on the importance of friendship and human connection.
