What to Watch Sunday: A new Hallmark movie filmed and set in North Carolina
Here’s what’s on TV tonight:
Monarch (8 p.m., Fox)
The first new scripted network series of the Fall TV season lands tonight, a special premiere after Fox’s NFL season opener. It stars Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins as the heads of a multi-generational family of country music royalty. The soapy drama is set in Texas, and seems to be modeled after Fox’s hip-hop family saga “Empire.”
The premiere episode actually airs twice, back-to-back, so if the games run late you’ll have two chances to grab the whole thing. The premiere episode also repeats Monday night at 9. And after that, new episodes will air on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., starting Sept. 20.
The Bad Seed Returns (8 p.m., Lifetime)
This movie actually premiered on Labor Day, but if you were out grilling burgers and missed it, there’s an “enhanced” presentation tonight.
From Lifetime: “Mckenna Grace stars as 15-year-old Emma, a seemingly typical teenaged girl who is anything but that. Set several years after the murderous events of the first movie which left her father (Rob Lowe) dead, Emma is now living with her aunt Angela and navigating high school. Angela’s husband begins to suspect that Emma may not be as innocent as she appears and suggests sending her off to boarding school. Meanwhile, a new girl (Ella Dixon) at school seems to know Emma’s secrets, leaving Emma no choice but to slip back to her old ways and take care of her enemies by any means necessary.”
To Her, With Love (9 p.m., Hallmark Movies & Mysteries)
This Mahogany original movie follows Kayla (Skye P. Marshall), who moves back to her fictional small NC hometown of Stoneville and takes a teaching job the local high school. When she learns that the school’s art department may be eliminated because of budget cuts, she and fellow teacher Jordan (Tobias Truvillion) set up a fundraising showcase with help from a longtime friend, singer Shanice Wilson-Knox (who appears as herself in a cameo role). During their work together, Kayla and Jordan fall in love.
The movie was filmed in Salisbury this summer — yes, Salisbury — and according to Fox 8 in Greensboro, Salisbury High School stood in for the school in the movie. There was also filming in the downtown area.
