What to Watch Sunday: New Gabby Giffords documentary premieres on CNN

CNN

Here’s what to watch on TV tonight. All times listed in Eastern Standard Time.

The American Music Awards (8 p.m., ABC)

Wayne Brady hosts with scheduled performers including Carrie Underwood, Imagine Dragons, J.I.D, P!NK, Tems, Wizkid and Yola.

‘A Waltons Thanksgiving’ (8 p.m., The CW)

This new TV movie is a sequel to last year’s “The Waltons: Homecoming” and catches the family preparing for Thanksgiving in 1934, in the middle of the Great Depression. John Walton (Teddy Sears) finds a way to provide for his family through farming and by picking up odd jobs from the eccentric Baldwin Sisters.

‘Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down’ (9 p.m., CNN)

This new documentary tells the story of the former Arizona congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt in 2011 and became an activist for gun violence prevention. Giffords, whose speech was impaired by her injuries, also works to promote more understanding around the language condition aphasia.

The film includes interviews with Barack Obama and with Giffords’ husband, Mark Kelly, a former astronaut and now US senator. We also hear from friends and colleagues, and witnesses to her shooting. The film is from Julie Cohen and Betsy West, the same team who brought us the Oscar-nominated documentary “RBG” and the Peabody Award-winning “My Name is Pauli Murray.”
