A preseason all-ACC selection at defensive tackle, DeWayne Carter’s Duke football career includes 45 games and he’s already surpassed 2,000 snaps played.
Yet, as the No. 16-ranked Blue Devils face their biggest test of this season against No. 4 Florida State on Saturday night, Carter has found an even better level of play.
“It’s good to see DeWayne Carter continuing to elevate his game,” Duke coach Mike Elko said Monday.
That begged the question: Just how is a player already considered one of the ACC’s best able to play even better? Turns out, it’s all about health and staying comfortable after so many games over the past four years.
“You know, I’m old,” said Carter, who’ll turn 23 in December. “I don’t think I realized how old I am. So, you know, the idea was to figure out how my routine was really gonna work for me and how much extra I had to do to be able to continue to play at a high level and really reach that high level.”
It’s allowed Carter to wreak more havoc in the center of the line, both against the pass and the rush, over Duke’s last two games. Against Notre Dame and N.C. State, Pro Football Focus assigned five “stops” to Carter. A stop, in that analytical website’s parlance, means “tackles that constitute a failure for the offense.”
Against Notre Dame, Carter had six quarterback pressures, hitting Sam Hartman once and hurrying him five other times.
“He’s making plays in the run game, he’s disrupting blocks,” Elko said. “I think in the throwing game, he’s active. He’s getting to the quarterback pocket areas, rushing the passer well, and so I just think he’s really taking the next step that we hoped he would add to his game.”
Duke will certainly need Carter at his best on Saturday night in Tallahassee, Florida. Florida State’s offense averages 42.4 points per game, No. 7 nationally and No. 1 in the ACC. Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis has 13 touchdown passes with just one interception while completing 63.2% of his passes for 1,482 yards.
