Watch: Red Wings runner nabbed by MLB prospect Dillon Dingler — after a ground-ball pitch

Rochester Red Wings first baseman Juan Yepez thought he had an easy stolen base, and no one could blame him.

But the arm of prospect catcher Dillon Dingler, which could be on display in MLB games soon, had other plans.

Yepez tried to steal a base during the first inning of Tuesday’s Triple-A game after Toledo Mud Hens pitcher Devin Sweet got tripped up and bounced a slow-rolling pitch to Dingler at home plate.

Sweet’s cleat appeared to get stuck in the ground. Instead of giving up an easy stolen base, Dingler — who is MLB Pipeline’s No. 13 Tigers prospect — fielded the pitch like an infielder and rifled a throw to third for the out.

Rochester (7-6) went on to win 2-0 thanks to Travis Blankenhorn’s two-run home run off Sweet in the second inning.

Dingler was a second-round Tigers draft pick in 2020. He played more spring training games this year than ever, specifically earning nods for keeping runners in their places.

“We had a couple of meetings with pitchers that specifically said, ‘Well, when Dillon got there, everything was fine with the running game,’” manager A.J. Hinch told MLB.com in March.
