One of the most talked-about films of the past year is, without a doubt, Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel to 1986’s Top Gun marked Tom Cruise’s return as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a top naval aviator tasked with training a group of young Top Gun graduates. But besides the OG pilot, the film features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Val Kilmer, Bashir Salahuddin, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, and Monica Barbaro.

Following its release in theaters, Top Gun: Maverick grossed more than $1.4 billion (!!) at the global box office, and over $690 million domestically, according to Variety. It even landed six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture (which is *major*), Best Film Editing, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Wait, should I watch Top Gun before Top Gun: Maverick?

Ofc, you want to watch Top Gun: Maverick before the 95th Annual Academy Awards on March 12. Where there’s still time, you might be wondering if you need to watch the original before streaming the sequel. But no, it’s not *absolutely* necessary to watch Top Gun before Maverick. It follows its own storyline and there aren’t many references to the first film. But, as is the case with most sequels, watching the original will likely help you understand characters like Maverick and Admiral Kazansky (“Iceman”), and their backgrounds, a bit better.
