WATCH LIVE: Derek Chauvin faces sentencing for murder of George Floyd

Ex-cop and convicted killer Derek Chauvin is set to be sentenced Friday for the murder of George Floyd, potentially closing a case that sparked anger in Minneapolis and across the country.

The fired police officer faces up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, the most serious charge for which he was convicted just two months ago. Prosecutors requested a 30-year prison term while defense lawyers asked for a sentence of probation and time served, but it’s Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill who will decide Chauvin’s punishment.

The highly anticipated sentencing hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EDT at the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis. Members of Floyd’s family were expected to deliver victim impact statements before Cahill hands down the sentence. Chauvin also has the right to address the court, but he is not expected to say much if he chooses to speak because of a possible appeal.

The hearing will be livestreamed and can be viewed here:
