One year ago, Jameis Winston was considered an outcast with a very small market. Fast forward to the present day and he has a chance to be the successor to one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history.

With the Drew Brees era officially over for the New Orleans Saints, the team is expected to hold a quarterback competition between Winston and Taysom Hill this offseason.

This position battle won’t start until late July, but it’s pretty evident that Winston is aiming for that top spot on the depth chart. On Tuesday, a video of Winston working on his ball security surfaced on social media.

Winston, who received a lot of criticism when he was on the Buccaneers due to all the interceptions he threw, also struggled to hold onto the ball while in the pocket. He had 50 fumbles during his five-year stint in Tampa.

Judging by the video, Winston is working very hard to make sure he’s not a turnover machine in New Orleans.

NFL fans will most likely remain skeptical of Winston until they see him prove on a consistent basis that he can be careful with the football. However, they can’t deny that he’s been working diligently to revamp his game both on and off the field.

During an interview earlier this year on the ‘Huddle & Flow’ podcast, Winston said he’s learning how to be more of a game manager.

“I never wanted to be deemed a game manager,” Winston said. “But really, that game manager is not a bad piece. That’s something that I think just comes with being a professional quarterback. Being able to not just only do the things that you can do, but being able to do the things that you should not do — like what not to do versus what can I do.”

Before Winston proves that he can be a game manager, he’ll have to win the starting job for the Saints.
