Illinois attempted a fake punt versus Nebraska on Saturday, and it proved to be successful. But there were a few shaky moments along the way.

The biggest surprise of Saturday’s college football outcomes came in the Big Ten, but not from the Indiana-Ohio State game. Rather, the Fighting Illini jumped out to a strong lead over the Nebraska Cornhuskers and never looked back.

Illinois had just one win this season entering Saturday’s Big Ten showdown. The same could be said for the Huskers, but at least their win came over Penn State. No matter what happened prior to Saturday’s game, Illinois was the better team this afternoon.

The Fighting Illini pulled out all the tricks to beat the Huskers on Saturday. One of those tricks included a fake punt which resulted in an easy conversion – that is, after Illinois’ punter had a few shaky moments on his way to the first down.

We have so many questions. Why was the Illinois punter so hesitant with so much wide-open field ahead of him? And what’s up with this side-step move in the middle of the run with no defender within 10 yards? I guess there’s a reason punters are typically only tasked with kicking the ball.

Luckily, the punter converted the fake for an easy first down. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have heard the end of it from his teammates.

Illinois currently leads Nebraska 38-27 as the fourth quarter approaches.
