What to Watch Friday: Diane Sawyer interviews ‘Friends’ star Matthew Perry

‘Matthew Perry - The Diane Sawyer Interview’ (8 p.m., ABC)

“Friends” star Matthew Perry — known as Chandler Bing to millions of adoring fans — talks to Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview about his 30+ year struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. His new memoir, “Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing,” releases on Nov. 1.

Perry, who estimates that he has been in detox 65 times, tells Sawyer about a medical emergency three years ago that nearly killed him. He was placed on an ECMO life support machine and was in a coma for 14 days, in the hospital for five months. Now, Perry says he’s “pretty safely sober” and his book is how he wants to help others struggling with addiction.

‘Dateline’ (9 p.m., NBC)

Andrea Canning reports on a devious murder-for-hire plot that results in a fire at the home of Carmela and David Knight in a Toronto, Canada suburb. As a family searches for answers, investigators launch an elaborate undercover sting that reveals the ultimate betrayal.

‘20/20’ (9 p.m., ABC)

“20/20” has the story of the murder of Arkansas state senator Linda Collins-Smith, who was killed in her home in 2019. Collins-Smith had security cameras installed throughout her home, but they had been removed. The video footage had been stored, however, and investigators were able to see the killer on the video with the murder weapon and tampering with the cameras.

‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ (Apple TV+)

Charlie Brown’s Halloween special, “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” is an Apple TV+ property, but it’s streaming free of charge on the network from Friday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 31.
