Netflix has released the intense first trailer for David Fincher's new movie The Killer ahead of its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival this weekend.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the much-anticipated action-thriller stars Michael Fassbender as the titular assassin who, after a fateful near-miss, battles his employers on an international manhunt that he insists isn't personal.

Following its Venice premiere, The Killer will be released in select cinemas in October ahead of its Netflix release on November 10.

The Killer also stars Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton, and marks Fincher's return to Netflix following 2020's Mank and the critically acclaimed Mindhunter.

While the trailer is light on plot details, it features a lot of the classic Fincher style and sees Fassbender's assassin repeating his own rules to himself, most important of which appears to be "stick to the plan".

It probably wouldn't be a movie if that plan didn't go wrong as some point, and we can't wait to find out what happens.

Earlier this year, Fincher gave a disappointing update on the future of Mindhunter on Netflix, but explained how that show being cancelled led to The Killer.

"I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment," he said.

"I don't blame them, they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer."

"It's a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness," he added. "The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways."

The Killer is released in select cinemas in October and on Netflix from November 10.
