Max's refreshing rom-com Starstruck is returning to ask: what happens after the romance?

The London-set series, created by New Zealand comedian Rose Matafeo, arrived on the streamer in March 2021, at a time when most in-person romances were still on pause due to the pandemic. The relationship between movie theater usher Jessie (Matafeo) and world famous actor Tom (Nikesh Patel) served up heart-warming moments while also exploring the messiness of love, especially when it comes to two people who are still trying to figure out their individual lives. Season 2 ended with an awkward yet heart-warming declaration of love, with Jessie and Tom sharing a kiss while standing in knee-deep pond water. However, the pair parted ways as jealousy and trust issues damaged their relationship, and season 3 will revisit each of them two years after the split.

In an exclusive clip obtained by Bazaar (seen above), Jessie visits Tom backstage during his new stage gig, after leaving a seemingly awkward date. Jessie remarks to Tom that the encounter feels like old times, describing it as "just hanging around in a sad room waiting for you," before they're interrupted by Tom's oblivious new co-star Martin (played by John Simm). The pompous newcomer looks down on Jessie's job at the theater, and as she and Tom make their exit, Martin tells her to "Dream big."

The official logline for season 3 reads: "Still living in London and working at the local cinema, Jessie (Matafeo) explores a new single life after parting ways with film star Tom (Patel). Two years after the breakup, Jessie navigates the pressures of adulthood and is confronted with the consequences of her own choices as her friends move on to the next stages in their lives, while Jessie is left questioning what she is really looking for."

Matafeo will make her directorial debut this season, along with writing partner and series co-creator Alice Snedden. In an interview following season 2, Matafeo and Patel spoke to Harper's Bazaar on why the series became a word-of-mouth hit upon its release.

"I think there's so much good TV, but so much of it is either miserable or asking you to root for fundamentally flawed or terrible people," Patel said. "I love those shows, but it's quite nice occasionally to watch two idiots dancing around each other and shouting, "Come on guys. Just smooch!"

"I love watching things for endorphins," Mateo added. "It sounds so simple and uncool, but you're like, 'I'm just a basic bitch who wants to be happy for 22 minutes.'"

All six episodes of Starstruck season 3 premiere on Thursday, September 28, on Max.
