Ben Affleck knows people think he’s ‘always mad’ in photos. He has a reason

Ben Affleck isn’t known for being a smiley guy when there are cameras around.

In a new episode of Kevin Hart’s Peacock talk show, “Hart to Heart,” Affleck opens up about the misconception that he always looks angry in photos.

He began by saying he’s a “little bit shy” and doesn’t like “a lot of attention.”

“People see me and they’re like, ‘Why is this dude always mad?’ Because somebody has their camera sticking in my face. And I’m like, ‘OK, here we go,’” he said.

Affleck said he often encounters unwelcome photography attempts while he’s out with his kids.

“What I’d actually like to do is do something much more definitive than just look at you (with a frown). And I may be angry that you’re around my child,” he said.

The 51-year-old said he understands that people are interested in taking photos of him at certain work events or when he’s “at a club” and said that doesn’t bother him.

“I don’t give a f---. Go ahead, knock yourself out. I don’t notice you. But with my children, that’s a different thing,” he said.

Hart observed that the “perception of anger” comes from the photo but doesn’t tell the entire story.

“What I’m doing at that time and where I’m at, I’m actually trying to enjoy my person, or my people,” Hart said.

Affleck agreed and said he may just be someone whose normal face may unintentionally look upset.

“I do find myself ... I’ll be sitting there at home (and someone will ask), ‘What’s wrong?’ (I’ll say) ‘Nothing,’ and nothing’s wrong. I’m listening to this thing. I start thinking, ‘Is something wrong?’” he said.

“You have resting b---- face!” Hart then exclaimed.

Affleck corrected him and said, “I have resting hard face.”

This isn’t the first time Affleck has addressed his signature look in photographs. In March 2023, he broached the topic while appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live," speaking about a Christmas party he'd thrown.

"It seemed you weren't quite as psyched about the party as everybody else was," Kimmel said.

Laughing at the remark, the 50-year-old protested, "That's a common misconception about me."

"Listen, I have a very unhappy-looking resting face," he added.

The actor then gave a demonstration of his facial expressions compared to the actual emotion he might be feeling.

"This is me content," he said, pausing in a seemingly disinterested facial expression.

After the audience erupted in laughter, Affleck then demonstrated his "amused" face, which differed only in angle from his "content" expression.

"That's how God made me! You don't have to punish me for it," he told Kimmel.

Social media users were quick to point out Affleck's seemingly bored expression at the 2023 Grammys alongside wife Jennifer Lopez. The moment was captured on camera and sparked several memes about how it looked like he'd rather be at his favorite coffee shop, Dunkin', over the award show.

But the actor said the internet misinterpreted the viral picture and told The Hollywood Reporter that he "had a good time at the Grammys."

“My wife was going, and I thought, ‘Well, there’ll be good music. It might be fun.’ At movie award shows, it’s speeches and, like, sound-mixing webinars. But I thought this would be fun,” he said.

The image of him and his wife whispering to one another was an example of particularly bad timing, Affleck explained.

“I saw (Grammy host Trevor Noah approach) and I was like, ‘Oh, God,’" he told the outlet. “They were framing us in this shot, but I didn’t know they were rolling. I leaned into her and I was like, ‘As soon they start rolling, I’m going to slide away from you and leave you sitting next to Trevor.’ She goes, ‘You better f------ not leave.’ That’s a husband-and-wife thing.”

During the March 28 interview, Kimmel said despite what his facial expressions might suggest, Affleck was a "gracious" and friendly host. However, he did note that Affleck complained about how much their Christmas tree cost.

“I’m turning into that old guy, like, ‘We’re gonna heat the whole neighborhood,’” Affleck joked.
