Watch Auto Mechanics Compete for Cash on National Television
Even if you’re a competent wrencher, the idea of diagnosing a transmission issue or completing a brake job as part of a competition would be daunting. Now imagine adding hundreds of onlookers, a giant screen displaying your every move in an arena with sounds and distractions everywhere, and, of course, a TV broadcast, and you might break out a sweat.
That’s exactly what happens in the U.S. Auto Tech National Championship. Now in its third year and sponsored by Yokohama, technicians from around the country competed in multiple rounds of digital competition to test their knowledge to get to the final set of winners.
Three professionals and three student apprentices earn big money for winning top marks: the first-place finisher on the professional side gets a check for $40,000 and the top student gets $25,000. That’s a nice chunk of change for performing under pressure.
The competition took place in late October, but it's making its television appearance later this week. Watch the entire spectacle (which the organization calls "The Olympics of the Trades"), hosted by All-Girls Garage co-host Faye Hadley, on CBS Sports Network on Friday, December 22 at 8 p.m. EST.
