How to Watch the 2022 New York City Marathon

Almost every year since 1970, runners have raced through New York City's five boroughs for the New York City Marathon. It's an exciting day in New York—"Marathon Sunday" should be a city-wide holiday—and it's worth watching in person if you are able.
The marathon begins at 8 a.m. ET with the professional wheelchair division, followed by the handcycle category at 8:22 a.m., professional women at 8:40 a.m., and professional men at 9:05 a.m. The five general waves of runners start at 9:10 a.m., and begin every 35 minutes.

How to watch the marathon in person:
From mile 3 to mile 26, the marathon course is open to spectators. When I cheered on my friend running a few years back, I staked out a spot on First Avenue in Manhattan (miles 16 through 18) and the energy was incredible—it's past the halfway point of the race, and runners definitely need the extra encouragement.
The race winds through all five boroughs, and though the Staten Island part of the race is closed to spectators, look at the race map to see where else you can go to watch. Here's where the New York City Road Runners, the organization that puts on the marathon, recommends you watch the marathon at various different points.
How to stream the New York City Marathon:
In New York, ABC 7 will broadcast the race on from 8:30 a.m. ET to 1 p.m. ET. Outside New York, ESPN 2 will have race coverage during that same time period. You can also live stream the race on the ABC7NY website, the ESPN website, or the ESPN app. In addition, the New York City Marathon app will have livestreams of the pro races.
