Warner Robins is installing traffic speed monitoring cameras outside these 3 schools

Warner Robins is moving forward with plans to install automated speed enforcement cameras in local school zones.

The Warner Robins City Council voted Monday to hire RedSpeed International, a technology company that will help install, operate and monitor the camera systems.

The cameras will be placed on city roads in front of Warner Robins High School, Northside High School and Lake Joy Elementary School and will enforce speeds only during regular school hours.

City officials said residents will get notices in the mail ahead of time and the schools will distribute materials to parents explaining the program.

After the cameras are installed, there will be a 30-day warning period before the enforcement officially starts. Drivers who speed during the 30-day period will receive a warning letter in the mail but will not be penalized.

RedSpeed International representative Greg Parks explained at the Warner Robins pre-council meeting that every speeding violation caught by the camera system will go through “multiple layers of review” before a ticket is issued. Each violation will be manually reviewed by two people at RedSpeed International and then will require manual approval by a Warner Robins police officer.

Interim Chief Wayne Fisher said someone in the department’s traffic division has already been assigned to review the violations and the city’s municipal court will have specific court dates set to resolve any issues residents have with the program.

The camera enforcement systems will not operate during weekends, holidays, summer break or outside regular school hours.

Drivers who speed 11 mph or more over the speed limit will receive a $75 fine for their first violation and $125 fine for each subsequent violation.

Mayor LaRhonda Patrick said the program, which is in collaboration with the Houston County School District, is currently estimated to take effect in January 2023.

A portion of the funds raised from the speeding tickets will go toward public safety initiatives in Warner Robins.

The City of Perry implemented its own speed enforcement program at its schools in August.
