Who wants $200K a year? Here are the 10 highest paying open SC state jobs in May

Six of the 10 top-paying jobs available in state government this week are in the medical field, with the top advertised being two psychiatrists in Beaufort County at a salary range of $200,000 to $230,000 a year.

The Department of Mental Health-MHC Coastal Empire is looking for a child psychiatrist who would travel through the five counties in its district, Allendale, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties.

The job calls for someone who is licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in South Carolina, completion of full four-year residency in psychiatry, completion of two-year fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry.

The agency prefers candidates who have experience treating children, adolescents and their families. After two years of service, the hiree is eligible for student loan repayment of up to $50,000.

The same mental health division is also looking for a psychiatrist at the same salary range, also based in Beaufort, with travel in surrounding counties and the benefit of $50,000 student loan forgiveness after two years.

The person in this role serves in state mental health clinics and in community facilities as assigned by the psychiatric service chief and on call with at least three other psychiatrists.

The doctor also consults with Probate Court and community agencies.

The 2nd Judicial Circuit based in Aiken needs a public defender. The salary is $212,786 annually.

This is a four-year term, handling the day-to-day operations of the office, supervising the public defenders and other staff and trying cases.

A law degree is required. Applicants must be at least 25 and admitted and licensed to practice law in all courts of South Carolina for at least five years.

The Department of Transportation is looking for a chief information officer at a salary between $156,000 and $183,219 a year.

This is a job that both supervises staff in human resources and handles all information technology for the agency.

A bachelor’s degree in communications, business administration, information technology, mathematics, statistics, management information science or a related field and nine years of experience in telecommunications, data processing and/or information technology is required.

The State Housing Finance & Development Authority is looking for a chief of staff at a salary range of $99,030 to $183,219 annually. The job is based in Lexington County.

The chief of staff oversees finance, programs and information technology and serves as an advisor to the executive director and Board of Directors.

The job requires a Master’s degree in business, public administration, accounting, finance, or a related field of study and 10 years of leadership experience in the administration of federal grants, housing programs, non-profits, finance, government, or a similar field of work.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control is looking for a physician in the Pee Dee Region, based in Florence but comes with the option of working two days in other areas. The salary is $165,500 annually.

This is a regional medical director job and involves day-to-day supervision of all public health services and supervises all clinical staff (i.e., medical practitioners, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, technicians, technologists, etc.).

This employee is the primary medical consultant in the Regional Command Center during public health emergencies and “provides medical/ epidemiological consultation for the region, other public health professionals, health care providers, and public for surveillance and control of communicable diseases,” the job post says.

The applicant must be a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine.

In addition, DHEC employees are required to participate in disaster preparedness during hazardous weather or declaration of an emergency.

The South Carolina Educational Television Commission needs a Chief Financial Officer at a salary of $81,388 to $150,585 a year. Based in Richland County, this position requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field and professional experience in a related area, such as accounting, auditing, finance, or banking, The commission will give preference to candidates with a master’s degree and eight years of experience.

The forensics department in the Department of Mental Health is looking for a Medical Non-Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner/Physician Associate at a salary between $81,388 and $150,585 a year.

Based in Richland County, this person works under the supervision of the Medical Director to provide patient care in the state forensic inpatient facility.

The state requires graduation from an accredited school of nursing at the master’s level or doctoral level and the agency further requires a nursing license and official recognition by the board as a nurse practitioner. Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

The Department of Mental Health also needs a psychologist and offers a salary between $81,388 and $150,585 a year. Based in Richland County at the Bryan Psychiatric and William S. Hall Hospital, the job involves treatment for acute and extended care forensic services patients.

A doctorate in applied psychology from an accredited college or university and experience in the practice of applied psychology is required. The agency also requires applicants to be licensed or license eligible as a clinical psychologist in South Carolina.
