One could argue that there are many types of people in this world. Or, they could argue that there are only two types: Those who shop at Costco and those who shop at Walmart. When it comes down to it, which store do Americans tend to favor the most, particularly when summer shopping commences?

GOBankingRates recently conducted a survey to find out which of these two gargantuan retailers Americans like the best — at least during the season of summer. To do this, we surveyed 999 American women aged 18 and older from across the country during the period of May 3 to May 7, 2024. We asked them a number of questions, including: Which retailer do you shop at most for your summertime needs?

The Winner

Walmart was the overwhelming favorite retailer, with 36% of respondents saying that’s where they most shop for their summertime needs. Costco was the second-favorite retailer, with 12.61% of respondents. Amazon came in third, with 12.11%; local grocery chains like Kroger and Publix came in fourth with 11.11%; Sam’s Club came in at No. 5 with 8.21%, followed by Target with 7.31%, Aldi with 4.50%, Dollar Tree with 3.20% and BJ’s Wholesale Club with 2.70%. Trader Joe’s lagged in last with 1.60%.

4 Examples of Excellent Summer Deals Right Now at Walmart

Summer is in the air and Walmart is at the top of its game, rolling out sale after sale to meet the various needs of summertime shoppers. Consider the following deals, and how much similar products would cost you at Costco right now.

Outdoor Sectional

Originally priced at $897, the Better Homes & Gardens brookbury five-piece wicker outdoor sectional dining set is now on sale at Walmart for $747. This is an especially attractive deal when you look at a similar option listed at Costco, a Sirio Aberdeen five-piece seating set that costs $3,500.

Air Conditioner

Another summer staple — air conditioners — are on sale at Walmart. The Midea 5,000-BTU mechanical window air conditioner is priced at $144, marked down by $31. And the similar (though more powerful) Hisense 8,000-BTU portable air conditioner at Costco is selling for $340. Yes, you are getting 3,000 more BTUs with the Costco option, but is that really worth $200 more?

Cooler

At Walmart, the 70-quart Igloo latitude marine ultra cooler costs $74. At Costco, the smaller Coho 55-quart roto cooler costs $140. Evidently it holds less, but costs more, so Walmart shoppers should be happy to see they’re getting the better deal.

Grill

What’s a summer without a summer cookout? Plenty of us will be shopping for grills and Walmart has compelling prices. For example, the Summit Living four-burner propane gas grill (with side burner) is on sale for $280, down from $450. This price is particularly attractive when you consider that the Costco option, the Napoleon COS485 four-burner propane gas grill, sells for nearly triple that, at $830.

Of course, both Walmart and Costco have their respective important places in the world of retail, and at the end of the day, it may be silly to argue which one is “better” — until, apparently, it comes to summer savings, where the winner is clear.
