Walking in a winter wonderland - which areas of Vermont got the most snow

The Vermont landscape is looking like a wintery wonderland.

A snow storm blew in Sunday evening, Dec. 10, and lasted through the day on Monday. Many students across the state had their first snow day as schools closed. And, ski resorts across the region boasted of their measurements on social media, calling it "Deepcember" owing to the ample amount of snowfall so far this season. The amount of snow received, however, varied by locale and elevation. Even the weather forecast kept changing as predictions evolved hours before it arrived. How did Vermont fare and who got the most snow during this event?

Snowfall totals across Chittenden County

Chittenden County had a wide swing of snowfall totals, according to snow reports provided to the National Weather Service. A majority of spotters reported between 1 inch and 4 inches. There were parts of Burlington and Colchester that just got an inch. South Burlington reports were around 2 inches and Essex and Williston were in the 2 to 3-and-a-half inch range. Milton got a higher amount than much of the county at 4.9 inches.

In southeast Chittenden, namely Huntington, Bolton, Jericho and Underhill, the numbers were generally higher in the 4- to 6-inch range. And, at the very edge of Chittenden and Washington counties at the west side of Little River State Park, there was a report of 9 inches.

A ruler shows snow at about 4-and-a-half inches deep on Dec. 12, 2023 in Williston following a snowstorm that ended the previous evening.
