Wake County’s school bus locator app is down. Here’s when it might start working again.

An app that’s supposed to let Wake County parents know where their child’s school bus is located will likely be down until at least Monday morning.

Wake County parents have been complaining about the Here Comes The Bus app not working since year-round schools started the new school year on Thursday. On Friday, Wake told families that the app likely won’t work for students as they’re taking the bus home that afternoon.

“We are experiencing technical difficulties with the Here Comes the Bus app,” the district posted Friday. “It likely will not be working this afternoon. Our service provider is working to have the app working by Monday morning. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Wake has been using Here Comes the Bus since the start of the 2017-18 school year.

The app is supposed to give parents real-time bus location information so they don’t have to worry about their child catching the bus in the morning and when their child will get home in the afternoon. But there have been issues over the past four years with the app, such as when a different bus than normal is assigned to a route.

The 2022-23 school year started Thursday for 31,000 students at 36 Wake County year-round schools. The majority of Wake’s students will report back Aug. 29 when traditional-calendar schools reopen.

Since Thursday morning, multiple parents have gone on social media complaining about the app not working. Several parents have tweeted that the app is telling them that Wake is no longer an active user.
